Prima Games is a company that writes companion strategy guides to video games and tabletop games. Prima has written strategy guides for main series Pokémon games, and most major spin-off games.

Main series games

Pokémon Red and Blue

Prima's guide for Red and Blue

Two guides were made for these games. One featured Charizard on the cover; the other had Blastoise. Each guide offered a complete breakdown of Kanto, including all cities, towns, routes and caves. Locations for all 150 Pokémon were given including their respective skills and statistics. A list of moves, and all available TM and HM locations was also given. Also included were a list of where to find items, tips on how to beat the Gym Leaders and maps of every location. This book was published on October 14, 1998 and is ISBN 0761518126.

Pokémon Yellow

Prima's guide for Yellow

This guide was published almost a year after the Red and Blue versions. On the cover was a picture of Pikachu. In addition to Yellow, the guide covered the other two versions of the Pokémon games available as well. This book was published on October 13, 1999 and is ISBN 0761522778.

Pokémon Gold and Silver

Prima's guide for Gold and Silver

Only one guide was made for these games. On the cover were Ho-Oh and Lugia. The guide gave a complete explanation of all the new features, such as the Pokégear. Details of the time-of-day dependent events were covered, with information on Pokémon specific to certain times.

Locations of all TMs and HMs were given. Battle tactics for how to obtain all eight Gym Badges were also given. Tips on breeding, capturing, raising, and training the new Pokémon were explained. A sealed section that revealed all puzzles and mysteries was included in the book too. This book was published on October 11, 2000 and is ISBN 0761530843.

Pokémon Master Pokédex

Pokémon Master Pokédex

A second book was released to complement the Gold & Silver guide. It features Pichu on the cover and contains in-depth information about all of the Generation I and Generation II Pokémon (excluding Celebi)'s stats, learnsets, locations, evolution information, and information about breeding and baby Pokémon. There is also a section with information about the Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS. This book was published in 2001 and is ISBN 0761534903.

Pokémon Crystal

Prima's guide for Crystal

This guide had a picture of Suicune on the cover. Quick-path walkthrough for Pokémon trainers on the move were given so the player could get to places faster. Complete maps and walkthroughs of the Johto and Kanto regions were shown. A comprehensive Pokédex containing Crystal moves, availability charts, and detailed stats for all 251 Pokémon were included. Every secret item location and puzzle solution was exposed in the book. Detailed Pokémon evolution and breeding tips were also a major part of the book. This book was published on July 24, 2001 and is ISBN 0744000874.

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire

Prima's guide for Ruby and Sapphire

Only one guide was published for these games. On the cover were both Kyogre and Groudon. Included in the book were:

  • Tips for winning the Pokémon Contests
  • Locations to all Secret Bases and Battle Towers
  • Thorough Pokédex, featuring Ruby and Sapphire Pokémon, with locations, statistics, and skills
  • Strategy to win all 2-on-2 battles and beat all enemy Pokémon Trainers

A special player's guide released in commemoration of the Pokémon 10th Anniversary. A companion to the previous few guides, it contains evolution, breeding and learnset information for all Pokémon in the National Pokédex as of Generation III, including Jirachi and Deoxys. It covers Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen; Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl

Prima's guide for Diamond and Pearl

On the cover was Lucas, Dawn, Barry, the Gym Leaders of Sinnoh, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Dialga and Palkia. This book included:

  • A large poster with exclusive Pokémon art.
  • Each area of the new Sinnoh region comprehensively covered so players will be able to find all the new Pokémon.

This book was published April 22, 2007 and is ISBN 0761556346.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Pokédex

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Pokédex guide

This book was an expansion of the previous book. This guide had numerous Pokémon on the cover. The majority of the book is a Pokédex, but it also gives a guide of where to catch specific Pokémon after getting the National Pokédex, as well as covering the Battle Zone. A poster of all the Pokémon known to the public (Darkrai, Shaymin and Arceus not included) was a bonus in the book.

This book was published on May 27, 2007 and is ISBN 0761556354.

Pokémon Platinum

Prima's guide for Platinum

On the cover of the book are Giratina, Lucas, Dawn, Pearl, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Shaymin Sky Forme, and all of the Sinnoh Frontier Brains.

The book included:

  • Complete Pokédex fully details all available Pokémon. Providing stats, levels, learned moves, and more. Including the newest additions to the Pokémon roster (excluding Arceus and information about the Rotom events).
  • Full walkthrough with maps, covering each area with maps, screenshots, and text

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Prima's guide for HeartGold and SoulSilver

On the cover are Ethan, Lyra, the Gym Leaders of Johto, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Ho-Oh, and Lugia. This book primarily covers the pre-Elite Four part of the game for HeartGold and SoulSilver.

The book includes:

  • Full walkthrough with maps, covering each area with maps, screenshots, and text
  • Details the game up to the defeat of the Pokémon League
  • A Pokédex showing details for the Pokémon that can be found in the Johto region
  • A mini-poster with the area map

This book was released on March 14, 2010 and is ISBN 0307468038.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokédex

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokédex guide

This book is an expansion of the first volume. It features a complete Pokédex of all 493 Pokémon, complete move lists, as well as the maps and strategy guides for the post-Elite Four areas of Kanto and the Battle Frontier. It also comes with a poster similar to the one from the Diamond and Pearl Pokédex. The major changes with this poster, is all the game sprites have been replaced with official artwork, and all the previous Pokémon that weren't on the previous poster (Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus), as well as the new Pokémon Formes introduced in Pokémon Platinum (excluding Rotom) have been included on this new poster which gave it a larger size than the previous poster. It was released on April 27, 2010 and is ISBN 0307468054.

Pokémon Black and White

On the cover are Hilbert, Hilda, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, Reshiram, and Zekrom. The book covers the games up through the end of the main plot.

The book includes:

  • Full walkthrough with maps, covering each area with maps, screenshots, and text
  • Details the game up to the defeat of the Pokémon League and Team Plasma
  • A mini-poster with the area map and type match-up chart

A collector's edition was also released which in addition the previously listed features, also includes a full Unova Pokédex listing. The collector's edition will feature a hard cover with a special lenticular cover featuring Reshiram and Zekrom.

Both editions were released on March 6, 2011.

Pokémon Black and White Pokédex

The second volume contains a full Unova Pokédex listing, including Victini. The cover displays many Generation V Pokémon, including the final forms of the Unova Starter Pokémon. Unlike previous second volume books, this one did not contain a full National Pokédex listing, and many of the charts cover only the Unova Pokédex. A bonus poster containing all 152 Pokémon in the Unova Pokédex was included.

It covers how to complete the Unova Pokédex, wireless communications, using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the Pokémon Global Link, competitive battle strategies, the Battle Subway and Pokémon Musical. It was released on April 25, 2011. The Prima edition is ISBN 0307890635, and the Piggyback International edition is ISBN 1906064903.

Pokémon Black & Pokémon White Versions: Official National Pokédex

On the cover are the final forms of all starter Pokémon from Generations I-V.

The book includes:

  • A complete Pokédex on 646 Pokémon (all known Pokémon excluding Keldeo, Meloetta and Genesect), including stats, level-up, compatible TM/HM, move tutor and egg moves, stats, evolutions and locations.
  • A guide on how to complete the National Pokédex.
  • A list of all moves, TM/HM locations, abilities, items and natures.

  • A guide to becoming a star at the Pokéstar Studios and winning at the Pokémon World Tournament

A collector's edition was released along side the standard version and included several items that were not available in the standard guide. The collectors edition includes:

  • A removable lenticular and four-color end sheets
  • An interview with one of the members of the company behind the design of the games, Junichi Masuda of GAME FREAK, as well as unique art assets.

The collector's edition features a hard cover that is individually numbered on the inside with a special removable lenticular cover featuring White and Black Kyurem.

Pokémon X and Y

The official Pokémon X and Y Kalos region guidebook was released on October 16, 2013. It is ISBN 0804161992. The guide is available in a hardcover edition featuring Xerneas and Yveltal on the front. Its total length is 416 pages.

Side games

Pokémon Stadium

The strategy guide for Pokémon Stadium was published by Prima in 2000. It is ISBN 0761522786. The front of the guide features Charizard and Blastoise from the game's cover artwork.

Aside from information on how to use the game's many features, such as the Game Boy Tower and the Pokémon Lab, the guide also includes party and moveset lists for all the Trainers in the game's many Cups (Prime Cup, Petit Cup, Poké Cup, Pika Cup and Gym Leader Castle) and information on unlockable secrets in the game (such as the Doduo and Dodrio GB Tower and various Pokémon that can be unlocked to download to the Game Boy games, like Surfing Pikachu).

Pokémon Stadium 2

This guide had Ho-Oh and Lugia from the game's boxart on the cover. Features included full teams for every trainer in the game, an extensive Pokédex containing learnsets for both Generation I and Generation II, and stats for all the Rental Pokémon available.

Pokemon Colosseum

Prima's guide for Colosseum

This guide covers a step-by-step walkthrough of the Story mode and Mt. Battle mode of Pokémon Colosseum, along with information on all Colosseum lineups, all items that appear in the game, and all available Pokémon. With each battle lineup are suggestions on how to win the battle, or how to avoid knocking out a specific Shadow Pokémon so it can be captured. This guide, however, includes a number of mistakes concerning type effectiveness, with tips such as "Beldum's steel hull resists Fire and Water-type attacks," when in truth, Steel does not resist either Fire or Water.
