Pidgeotto (Japanese: ピジョン Pigeon) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Pidgey starting at level 18 and evolves into Pidgeot starting at level 36.

Biology

Physiology

Pidgeotto is a large raptor-like bird. While its primary color is brown, its plumage is much more elaborate than its pre-evolution, Pidgey. Its head-crest is much longer than Pidgey's and is a reddish color. The plumage of its tail is also quite colorful, alternating between red and yellow. Other than its ornamental plumage, its basic coloration is similar to Pidgey, with pinkish-gray feet and black markings around its eyes. Pidgeotto has powerful talons to grasp prey so these claws can inflict a lot of damage.

Special abilities

As well as being a powerful flier, it is capable of carrying prey several miles to its nest. Pidgeotto have an amazing sense of sight and hearing. Its eyesight is so good that it can spot a Caterpie from several miles up in the air.

Behavior

After evolution, Pidgeotto assumes a predatory niche. It claims a sprawling territory (more than 60 miles) and fiercely defends it from intruders. One must be careful when moving through the territory of a Pidgeotto; while there is no evidence that they would attack a human, their sharp claws could cause a lot of damage. Although its nest is usually in the center of its territory, it circles its territory throughout the day, looking out for prey and intruders.

Habitat

Pidgeotto typically dwell in forests with thick growth and large trees. They need a lot of space, and are very territorial, so it can be assumed that their territories usually do not overlap. They are most common in Kanto and Johto.

Diet

Pidgeotto, although omnivorous like most Pokémon, appears to prefer preying on other Pokémon such as Exeggcute. Both the anime and Pokémon Adventures have shown it attempting to eat a main character's Caterpie. Pidgeotto are known to prey on Magikarp by catching them in mid-jump.

Major appearances

Ash's Pidgeotto

In the anime, Ash caught a Pidgeotto in Ash Catches a Pokémon. Since then, it played a role as one of Ash's main Pokémon. It participated in the Gym battles against Team Rocket, Brock, and Misty, and was frequently used for breaking Team Rocket's Meowth-shaped balloon. However, it was the only one of Ash's Pokémon at the time, save some of his numerous Tauros, not to participate in the Indigo League Conference. It eventually evolved into Pidgeot and left Ash's party to guard other Pidgey and Pidgeotto.

Other

Vladimir owns a Pidgeotto which knows Aerial Ace. He uses it to demonstrate to other trainers, like Ash and his Swellow, how to use the Flying-type attack.

Minor appearances

A Pidgeotto appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

A Pidgeotto and a flock of Pidgey briefly appeared in The Rise of Darkrai.

Multiple Pidgeotto had a cameo appearance at the beginning of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

In the manga

In the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

Ash's Pidgeotto appears in the manga series The Electric Tale of Pikachu. It is the fourth Pokémon that Ash captures in the manga.

In the chapter Play Misty For Me, Ash tries to use his Pidgeotto in his battle against Misty, but all there is inside its Poké Ball is a note which says "I'm beat! Off to get some R&R. Don't forget to write! -Pidgeotto". It is unknown if Pidgeotto has permanently left Ash's party following this, however, it does not appear in the manga since then.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

In the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter, Falkner owns a Pidgeotto.

In Pidgeotto Pick-Me-Up a Pidgeotto kidnaps Yellow's Caterpie.

Trivia

• In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the player's rival has a Level 17 Pidgeotto when battled in Cerulean City, although Pidgey does not evolve until Level 18.
• Falkner's Pidgeotto in the first match of Generation II games and its remakes is underleveled, at a level at which this Pokémon is unobtainable in games other than Pokémon Yellow, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. In all of these games, they can be found in the same location, Viridian Forest.
• Pidgeotto and its evolutionary line are the only Normal-type Pokémon to learn Twister by leveling up. They were the only ones to even be capable of knowing it before Platinum.
• Pidgeotto is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 349.

Origin

Despite its name, its design appears to be less of a pigeon and more of an osprey or other bird of prey.

Name origin

Its name is a corruption of pigeon, a common bird; its Japanese name clearly refers to said species of bird. Its name could also possibly refer to Otto Lilienthal, a pioneer of unpowered heavier-than-air flight.
