Pearl (Japanese: パール) is one of the male main characters for the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl story arc of Pokémon Special. He is impatient and is often accidentally getting himself and his friend, Diamond into trouble. He is the straight man (tsukkomi) of the comedy duo, with Diamond as the funny man. His appearance is based off that of Pearl from the video game series.
A mix-up has them thinking they will gain a prize for escorting Berlitz to Mt. Coronet. Berlitz, mistaking them for her bodyguards, has given them Pokédexes, Pokétches, and starter Pokémon from Professor Rowan.
While Pearl does not have an active interest in battling, his father taught him a lot and so he has picked up a lot of useful techniques. He puts this into use by coaching Berlitz for her Gym challenges. Pearl is fairly hyper and tends to overeact at times.
Pearl is the unoffical leader of the party; he also composes battle strategies for Berlitz's Gym challenges. Pearl and Diamond are practically as close as brothers, however, that doesn't mean Diamond doesn't get on Pearl's nerves, at which point Diamond receives a smack to the head. Pearl has a deep respect for Lady Berlitz, amazed at her level of skill in practically everything. But this is usually masked by Pearl's annoyance at Berlitz for being aloof.
