Palkia (Japanese: パルキア Palkia) is a dual-type Water/Dragon legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Palkia is the version mascot of Pokémon Pearl, appearing on the boxart.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Palkia looks dinosaur-like, similar to Dialga, though it seems to be based off of a therapod. Despite possessing wings and the ability to fly on its own, it is not able to learn the move Fly through HM02 or any other means. It has plates on its shoulder area, where two pink pearls lie encrusted. Palkia has a long neck and a powerful tail.

Gender differences

Palkia is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Palkia has the ability to warp space. An example of this was shown in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, in which Palkia was able to shuffle the landscape of Almia around at a whim, allowing doors to connect to places miles away and for large forests to fit inside tiny houses. In the Pearl version of the game, it is mentioned on the statue in Eterna City that it can create alternate realities.

Palkia's skills in battle are mostly the same as Dialga's, except that Palkia can learn a handful of Water-type moves. Palkia is also slightly faster than Dialga and has weaker defensive stats. Palkia is one of the rare species that knows the move Aura Sphere.

Palkia's powers can be amplified with the Lustrous Orb.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2, Palkia travels by creating a large yellow sphere from its two pearls, then using it to fly very fast.

Palkia is the only known Pokémon that learns Spacial Rend (apart from an event Darkrai released for the tenth movie in Japan, another released in US, an event Arceus released for the twelfth movie in Japan, and Smeargle who can Sketch it).

Behavior

Like Dialga, Palkia lives in a different dimension, making its behavior nearly impossible to study. However, Palkia has been seen in violent conflicts with Dialga.

Habitat

Legends say that it lives "in a gap in the spatial dimension parallel to ours."

Diet

In the anime

Dialga and Palkia under the control of Cyrus.

Palkia makes an appearance in The Rise of Darkrai along with Dialga and Darkrai, in which it fights with Dialga and nearly destroys Alamos Town.

In Giratina and the Sky Warrior, it did not have a main role, but appeared in a flashback to its battle with Dialga from the previous movie.

Finally, in Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Palkia, alongside Dialga and Giratina, start a battle which awakens an ancient power.

A silhouette of Palkia appeared in All Dressed up with Somewhere to Go.

Palkia's statue appears with its silhouette in A Secret Sphere of Influence!.

Another statue also appeared in Steeling Peace of Mind! and Saving the World From Ruins!.

Palkia itself will make its first episode appearance in DP150.

Palkia also makes a cameo in the Together and Diamond and Pearl openings.

In the manga

In the Arceus and the Jewel of Life manga adaption, Palkia, along with the members of its trio, was summoned by Sheena to help Ash and his friends. Palkia soon engaged in a battle with the other members of its trio along with Arceus.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Palkia on Spear Pillar

Palkia occasionally appears on the Spear Pillar stage as one of three Pokémon that controls it. It only appears on the stage when the ground on the upper levels have a purple tinge to them. Unlike Dialga and Cresselia, it'll use its powers to distort the stage however possible. Some examples include tilting the stage, turning the stage completely upside down and reversing the screen itself (the last two will cause the movement controls to be reversed temporarily). It often shoot beams in the cave below, dealing a lot of damage to the players that get caught in the blast.

Game data

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Palkia accuses the player and its partner that they are the one responsible for the distortion of fabric of space. Later, Palkia confronts them and bring them to Spacial Rift.
  • Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: Palkia appears as a bonus boss during one of the Ranger Net extra missions. Palkia was injured from a battle with Dialga and entered Hippowdon Temple. In its pain, it warped the space of the Almia region and caused all of the locations of Almia to be shuffled together.

Trivia

  • Palkia and Dialga's US names were revealed on January 20, 2007.
  • Despite possessing wings and the ability to fly on its own, it is not able to learn the move Fly through HM02 or any other means. Palkia does not even have the ability Levitate and thus remains susceptible to Ground-type moves.
  • Palkia and Kingdra are the only two Pokémon that are dual-type Water/Dragon.
    • Due to this, Palkia is the only member of the dragon trio that does not have a unique type combination.
  • Despite being primarily a Water-type Pokémon, it only learns three Water-type moves through level up.
  • The gems in Palkia's arms resemble Pale Spheres.
  • Palkia, along with Dialga and Phione, has the second highest catch rate after Mew, Celebi and Shaymin out of all the legendary Pokémon, with a catch rate of 30.
  • Palkia and Dialga are the first legendary Pokémon to be met at a level that is not divisible by 5, appearing at Level 47.
  • Although Palkia is genderless in the main games, it is referred to as a male in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2, Palkia, along with Dialga and Regigigas, all speak in capital letters, unlike the other Pokémon in the game.
  • Palkia is in the highest IQ group. It takes this position in IQ group J and is the only Pokémon in IQ group J.

Origin

Palkia is likely based after a European dragon with a pearl. Like Dialga's origin possibly from the largest sauropod dinosaur, Amphicoelias, Palkia may be based on another sauropod, the bipedal Plateosaurus.

Name origin

The Pal (Paru) in its name is derived from the Japanese word for pearl, パール pāru.
