Quotes

  • First battle:

"My physical being is with Pokémon always! My heart beats as one with Pokémon always! Young one of a Trainer! Do you believe in your Pokémon? Can you believe them through and through? If your bonds of trust are frail, you will never beat my brethren! The bond you share with your Pokémon! Prove it to me here!"

"Ah... Now this is something else... Gwahahah! Hah, you never fell for my bluster! Sorry for trying that stunt! Here! Bring me the thing! My, my, if only you could maintain that facade of distinguished authority... Here! Let's see your Frontier Pass! Your Pokémon's eyes are truly clear and unclouded. I will eagerly await the next opportunity to see you."

  • Second battle:

"Gwahahah! You've battled your way up again? You must have developed a truly formidable bond with your Pokémon. So be it! This time, I won't bluster or hold back. This time, there's no fooling around. Ready now? Prepare to lose! ... ... ...Kaaah!"

"Gwah! Hahahaha! Well, that was some display! Even fully unleashed, my brethren could not overpower you. You team spirit is truly admirable! Here! Bring me that thing, will you? My, my, if only you could maintain a certain level of decorum... Gaaah, here! Hurry with that Frontier Pass, you! Gwahahah! Come see me time and again! My brethren and I will be waiting!"

Spenser in the anime

Spenser first appeared in the episode Cutting the Ties that Bind. He is a kind old man who specializes in herbal medicines, healing Ash's Sceptile when it apparently lost its fighting skills. While he usually rides on his Venusaur, he has a lot of stamina which is shown in battle. Spenser uses the whole of the island he lives on as a battlefield and so battles have an emphasis on nature and include a lot of running around.

In Ka Boom with a View, Spenser used a Venusaur, Shiftry and Claydol in his battle against Ash, who used his Swellow, Heracross, and Sceptile, Sceptile learning SolarBeam in the process. He also has a Chansey, which he used to heal Ash's Sceptile.

Spenser's Shiftry
Shiftry
Shiftry first appeared in Ka Boom with a View!. It was the first Pokémon to be sent against Ash, while he chose Sceptile. Before using any move, Spenser's Shiftry dodged the Bullet Seed from Sceptile and was told to move to the jungle. It had immense speed but Sceptile was also no less, as it chased it all along. Ash told Sceptile to use Leaf Blade and Shiftry intercepted it with its Quick Attack. They were said to be "evenly matched" by Max while Scott exclaimed to be the "Lord of the Jungle" while Sceptile being "King of the Forest." After the two Grass-types reach a small waterfall, Shiftry launches its Double Team confusing both Ash and his Sceptile. Shiftry then follows the attack with a powerful Shadow Ball which hit Sceptile hard and pushed it into a pool. Before Sceptile could get out of the water, Shifter laid down its Rock Smash and caused rocks to land directly upon Sceptile who is still underwater. But Sceptile came out from the top of the waterfall after climbing it and landed with a hard Pound and effective Leaf Blade on the startled Shiftry. This marked the end of Shiftry and it fainted, giving Ash an upper hand and Sceptile a victory.

Spenser's Claydol
Claydol
Claydol appeared in the episode Ka Boom with a View!, where it was the third Pokémon to be sent out against Ash. Claydol had to face Ash's Swellow and Sceptile and is the power-house of Spenser's team.

Before starting the third and final round of the battle, Spenser said: "Our natural world is over-flowing with all sorts of energy and in many forms. This Pokémon excels in drawing forth many of these energies." referring to his Claydol and even mentioned that "You'll find victory most challenging this time."

Ash told his Swellow to use Quick Attack on Claydol, but Claydol dodged it with Teleport, which lead into a Rapid Spin attack hitting Swellow hard from behind. Swellow regained its flight only to be fazed by a Rapid Spin attack sending up a cloud of dust and sand, catching Swellow off guard. Combining this with a Hyper Beam, Claydol knocked Swellow out.

Ash then sent Sceptile back into battle. Claydol used Psybeam, which Sceptile manages to dodge, jumping out of the way. Sceptile unleashed a Bullet Seed, but Claydol again dodged the attack with Teleport, sending it above the surface of the water, where it sent out a jet of water directly at Sceptile by using Rapid Spin. But, since water is weak against the Grass-type, it did not cause much damage and Sceptile got out by jumping over a cliff.

Then suddenly, the sun went covered by clouds which were non-helpful towards Sceptile as it could no longer absorb sunlight as energy. Spenser explained it to be a natural phenomenon called "squall" common in Metallica Island. The weather conditions worsened when it literally started raining. Claydol, taking advantage of the weather, then released another Rapid Spin to send out a sand twister. Sceptile tried to avoid but eventually got caught in the twister. Using this advantage, Spenser ordered Claydol to use Psybeam at the twister, doing serious damage to Sceptile as it sent out flying and struggled to gain its feet again, slipping as it tries to stand.

After a few seconds the clouds scattered and the sun was available to Sceptile again. Sceptile then went on drawing as much solar energy as it could to charge for a Solar Beam using it's yellow energy pods.

Spenser commanded Claydol to disrupt the attack using a powerful Hyper Beam. Sceptile easily dodged this attack by jumping high and then unleashed the powerful Solar Beam, knocking out Claydol. This was the end of Claydol's fight as well as the challenge for the Spirits Symbol.

Spenser fought alongside Lucy during the press show-off of the Battle Frontier during its grand opening, using a Crobat with Poison Fang. Having touched the Blue Orb before, Spenser is able to recognize people who have once held the Blue Orb, such as Sapphire. However, it is this very ability that led Ruby and Sapphire to think that he was Guile Hideout.
