Nidoran♀ (Japanese: ニドラン♀ Nidoran♀) is a Poison-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Nidorina starting at level 16, who evolves into Nidoqueen via Moon Stone.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Nidoran♀ is a small, rabbit-based Pokémon with large ears, whiskers and front teeth. They are covered with small spines primarily on their back which can release potent poisons if Nidoran♀ is threatened. Nidoran♀ doesn't seem to possess any fur, similar to reptiles. Nidoran♀ have a smaller forehead horn than their male counterparts, Nidoran♂.

Gender differences

Nidoran♀ is the female of the species, and is noted to be the first Pokémon to denote gender differences. In the later generations, however, Pokémon with genders are marked with a ♀ or ♂ symbol, rather than being actual different Pokémon.

Compare with Nidoran♂. Note how the male Nidoran has a longer horn and more spines, as well as a different color.

Special abilities

Nidoran♀ usually attacks by clawing and biting her foes. She also has the aforementioned ability to secrete poison from her small spikes. Nidoran♀ can also wield a couple of Ice and Electric attacks.

Behavior

Nidoran♀ are known to be rather docile and reserved. However, angering one can result in being poisoned by one of its toxic spines. These are thought to have developed to counteract its small size.

All members of the Nidoran family can sometimes put a stronger effort in battle when faced with a foe of the same gender.

Habitat

Nidoran♀ live in expansive savannas and plains, or any open space.

Major appearances

A romance between male and female Nidoran was the focus in Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?. After the battle with Team Rocket, and after kissing Ralph's Nidoran♂, Emily's Nidoran♀ evolved into a Nidorina.

Minor appearances

Nidoran♀'s debut was in Sparks Fly for Magnemite as a sick Pokémon at a Pokémon Center.

A differently patterned Nidoran♀ appeared in Poké Ball Peril.

It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

A group of Nidoran♀ appeared in Leading a Stray!.

This concludes the entries from the original series.

In the manga

Green had a Nidoran♀ in Pokémon Adventures. She later evolved into Nidorina and then Nidoqueen. Blue used her in Indigo Plateau to attract Fisher Wliton's Nidoran♂ and to persuade him to trade his Butterfree for her Weedle; she was stopped by Red.

Bill had a Nidoran♀ in Pokémon Zensho that he accidentally merged with in a transporter experiment.

Trivia

  • Nidoran was the first Pokémon to feature gender, and even gender differences; however, their difference is much greater than later Pokémon.
  • Despite the addition of genders in all Pokémon starting in Generation II, the two variations of Nidoran remained separate species, rather than a singular species that splits down different evolution paths based on gender.
    • A Nidoran♀ egg does, however, have a chance of hatching into a Nidoran♂.
  • Nidoran♀'s alternate coloration is similar to Nidoran♂'s normal coloration.
  • Nidoran♂ and Nidorino share the same species name with their female counterparts Nidoran♀ and Nidorina. They are all known as Poison Pin Pokémon.
  • Due to the fact that its gender, ♀, is included in its name, checking Nidoran♀'s summary from Generation II onward will display as if it were genderless if it does not have a nickname. If its nickname is anything other than "Nidoran♀", its gender will appear as normal.
  • Every one of Nidoran♀'s Pokédex entries mentions its horns and their poisonous nature.
  • Nidoran♀ is one of eight Pokémon whose name has a non-alphabetic character in it, the others being Nidoran♂, Farfetch'd, Mr. Mime, Porygon2, Ho-Oh, Mime Jr. and Porygon-Z.

Origin

Nidoran♀ appears to be based on a rabbit or mouse, or even a hamster.

Name origin

Nidoran♀'s name may be based on the word needle. Alternatively, it may be based on 二 ni, two, or 二度 nido, two times/two degrees, referring to there being two distinct evolutionary lines with similar names and traits. Also, the Japanese word ran is translated as orchid in English. Orchids are flowers that can be purple or blue. These colors are the same as the male and female evolutionary forms of Nidoran, respectively. It is possible that the name may also be based on cnidocyte, a type of venomous cell responsible for the stings delivered by stinging animals, most notably, by jellyfish. The in its name is an indication of its female gender.

In other languages

  • German: Nidoran♀
  • French: Nidoran♀
  • Korean: 니드런♀ Nideuran♀
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 尼多蘭 Ní Duo Lán - Transliteration of its original name. The character 蘭 in Chinese is a character usually used in female names as opposed to male names as it means orchid, a type of flower.
  • Chinese (Hong Kong): 尼美蘭 Ní Mìi Lán - Probably similar to the Taiwanese translation.
