Trivia
- Magmar is one of four Pokémon to receive both a pre-evolution and new evolution in generations after its release. The other three are Chansey, Electabuzz, and Roselia.
- Magmar and Electabuzz seem to be counterparts as both their baby forms evolve at level 30, they are version exclusives, and they both evolve holding an item.
- Even though most Pokémon's Crystal sprites are based off of their Gold sprites, Magmar's is a reflection of it's Silver sprite.
Origin
Magmar seems to be a combination of a duck or booby with a mythical salamander of fire. However, the tail and the spikes on its back resemble those of an iguana. It could also be based on a Karura.
Name origin
Magmar's name may just be a corruption of the word magma, intrusive molten rock. Its Japanese name might be a corruption of booby, a type of sea bird.
