Kai Midorikawa (緑川 開), nicknamed Green, is a character from the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga, and is based on Blue from the original games. He is Isamu Akai's rival and takes Pokémon much more seriously, although has questionable ethics in attaining his goals. His surname contains the Japanese word for "green" (緑 midori).

History

Kai Midorikawa started on his Pokémon journey the same day as Isamu Akai when the two trainers were racing down to Professor Oak's laboratory. Kai starts off with a fierce Charmander. By the time Isamu caught his first official Pokémon, Kai has already caught at least eight Pokémon. Later, he is shown flying on his Charizard.

		When Kai was showing Isamu how many Pokémon he caught, Golbat was one of the Pokémon in the Poké Balls. In Receive the Moon Stone!!, Kai caught his second Golbat as it was able to scare Clefairy easily. One of the Golbat was later seen in Pokémon Baseball Tournament!! watching the baseball game between Isamu and Kai.

		Meowth first appeared in a performance on stage when Kai participated. It evolved into a Persian and back into a Meowth. Later, Kai used Meowth in the Sports Meet event. Meowth's known moves are Pay Day and Fury Swipes.

• The rules of evolution seem to be very different in Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga. When Kai's Charmander first evolved into Charizard temporarily, it omitted the Charmeleon form. Later, it evolved off-screen permanently and it's unknown if he ever was a Charmeleon. It is possible that he was able to omit the Charmeleon form again.
