Ivysaur (Japanese: フシギソウ Fushigisou) is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves from Bulbasaur starting at level 16, and evolves into Venusaur starting at level 32.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Ivysaur, like its pre-evolved form Bulbasaur, resembles a toad or a dinosaur, though the patches in its skin cause it to more closely resemble a dinosaur. After evolving from Bulbasaur, Ivysaur grows small fangs. Ivysaur's skin is also a little bit more blue than Bulbasaur's. When its plant is ready to bloom, it gives off a distinct aroma and starts swelling. Ivysaur will also start spending more time in sunlight in preparation for its upcoming evolution. Its plant is also an indicator of its overall health as when it grows, Ivysaur absorbs more nutrients.

Unlike its previous form, Bulbasaur, Ivysaur can no longer stand on its hind legs due to the bulb getting larger and heavier and its legs have grown thicker and stronger.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Much like its previous form, most of Ivysaur's abilities originate from the plant on its back. Naturally, these attacks are stronger than Bulbasaur's. Its abilities are such like petals, powders, and scents than vines and leaves, most likely because of the larger flower on its back. In the anime, Ivysaur are shown to manipulate nature.

Behavior

Being much more commonly found in captivity then in the wild, Ivysaur's natural behavior is largely unknown, but it can be theorized that they are more aggressive then Bulbasaur, although it is still very loyal to its trainer.

When Ivysaur is ready to evolve, it starts spending more time in the sun to absorb more nutrients. It also releases a strong sweet-smelling odor.

Habitat

Ivysaur's natural habitat seems to consist of plains with access to large amounts of sunshine and fresh water but can be found in forests and jungles. However, they are rare, as many are in captivity.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Like its pre-evolved form, Bulbasaur, Ivysaur can last many days without eating, because it can absorb the sun's energy through the flower on its back.

Major appearances

Ivysaur first appeared in Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden. Numerous Bulbasaur were seen evolving into Ivysaur, except for Ash's Bulbasaur, who refused to.

May's Ivysaur

May's Bulbasaur evolved into an Ivysaur at some point after Home is Where the Start Is. Before she was seen again in Staging a Heroes Welcome, she had already become a Venusaur.

Other

An Ivysaur was under the ownership of Crystal in Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl.

Ivysaur appeared under the ownership of a teenager named Jimmy in Judgement Day.

Minor appearances

In The Ultimate Test, Ivysaur was one of the Pokémon owned by the Pokémon League entrance exam instructor.

A Trainer named Assunta used an Ivysaur to battle and defeat Ritchie in Friends to the End.

Jeremy's Ivysaur appeared in a flashback in Weekend Warrior.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Ivysaur using Vine Whip to hold onto the edge in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Ivysaur is a playable Pokémon used by the Pokémon Trainer. It can use the moves Bullet Seed as a rapid aerial striking move and Vine Whip as a recovery move where the vine is shot out to latch onto edges of a stage and pulled back up again. It also uses the projectile attack Razor Leaf. Ivysaur is a Middleweight and uses mostly physical Grass-type attacks. It uses SolarBeam in Red's Final Smash, Triple Finish.

Trivia

  • Ivysaur is the first evolved Pokémon in National Dex order.
  • Its Red and Blue sprite shows Ivysaur standing on its hind legs, despite the Pokédex entries stating that it loses that ability upon evolution. This was corrected in future games.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ivysaur is the only Pokémon that Pokémon Trainer uses that doesn't use an HM move as Squirtle uses Waterfall, and Charizard uses Rock Smash and Fly.
    • Additionally, Ivysaur is the only playable quadrupedal character (although both Pikachu and Pichu will be on four legs when running).
  • Ivysaur's number in the National Pokédex and the Fiore Browser are the same: 002. This makes it and its evolution family one of only five families of Pokémon (comprising thirteen Pokémon altogether) to have the same numbers in more than one Pokédex-like listing.
  • Ivysaur is the only second stage Grass/Poison Pokémon that does not require an evolution stone to reach its final form.
  • Ivysaur is the only second stage form of the Kanto starters to not be directly seen under the ownership of a main character in the anime. May owns a Venusaur that she evolved from a Bulbasaur but it was never seen onscreen as an Ivysaur.

Origin

Ivysaur is a lizard-based Pokémon and appears to be based on some form of Dicynodont, mammal-like reptiles from the Permian.

Name origin

Ivysaur's name is a combination of the words ivy and saur, which is Greek for lizard. Its Japanese name can be taken to mean it seems strange, or 不思議 草 fushigi sou strange grass.

In other languages

  • German: Bisaknosp - Derived from Bisamratte (muskrat) and Knospe (bulb).
  • French: Herbizarre - A combination of herb and bizarre sharing likeness with lizard'.'
  • Korean: 이상해풀 Isanghaepul - "Strange grass."
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 妙蛙草 Mìao Wa Câo - "Weird frog grass."
  • Chinese (Hong Kong): 奇異草 Qí Yì Câo - "Unusual grass."
