Growl (Japanese: なきごえ Cry) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I.

Effect

Growl decreases the opponent's Attack by 1 level.

Growl also will not affect a Pokémon with the abilities Soundproof, Hyper Cutter, Clear Body, or White Smoke.

In a double battle, Growl hits both opponents. In a triple battle, Growl will only hit opposing adjacent Pokémon.

Trivia

• Although the sound-based mechanic was not introduced until Generation III, Growl is listed in move index number near other Generation I sound-based moves; Roar, Sing, and Supersonic.
• In Generation I, all Pokémon that learned Growl by leveling up learned it at a level above 10, if they didn't start with the move. From Generation II and onwards, however, Eevee is the only Pokémon to learn Growl by leveling up that learns it past level 10. However, in Generation I, Eevee had Growl as a starting move, albeit in Pokémon Yellow only.
