Gold and Whitney arrive in Goldenrod City. After showing Gold some landmarks like the Radio Tower, Whitney takes him to the Pokémon Day Care. At they Day Care, Whitney introduces Gold to the Day-Care Couple, who invite him to take place in a tournament organized by the Day-Care Center. All Pokémon used in the tournament are currently being raised at the Day-Care Center and are used with the permission of the original Trainers. The tournament is being DJed by Kurumi.

Gold chooses three Fighting-type Pokémon, as he also wants to use them against Whitney's Normal-type Pokémon. He chooses Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop. Using these three Pokémon, Gold battles his way up through the tournament until he reaches the final battle against Black.

Black mocks Gold before the battle and reminds him that his Fighting-type Pokémon will be weak against his Psychic-type Alakazam. Gold decides to fight anyways, sure that his Pokémon will overcome their disadvantage. Black's Alakazam and Sneasel defeat Hitmonlee, and Black says that if Gold announces he will stop being a Trainer, he will stop his Pokémon from attacking Gold's. Gold's Pokémon choose to fight anyways, and the crowd, much to Black's surprise, are cheering for Gold.

Hitmonchan uses itself as a shield to block Alakazam's Psychic attack from hitting Hitmontop. When Hitmontop got close enough, it used Triple Kick, aiming to hit both Alakazam and Sneasel. Instead, however, Sneasel pushes Quilava in the way, which takes the full force of Hitmontop's attack. Sneasel attacks Hitmontop, winning the battle.

The crowd is outraged at Black's unfair tactics, but Black is indifferent, turning and leaving. The Day-Care Man tells Gold that he is considered the true winner because he fought fairly, and he is awarded a Tyrogue. Gold vows to defeat Black one day.
