Farfetch'd (Japanese: カモネギ Kamonegi) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Farfetch'd resemble ducks. They have glossy brown plumage with a small crest. It also bears black plumage on its forehead that resembles eyebrows.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Its wings are a bit more versatile than most birds' as their feathers can be used as "fingers," allowing it to carry a leek, or spring onion.

Behavior

Farfetch'd are always seen carrying a leek stalk, or spring onion. They carry it in their wings and sometimes choose to hold it in their beaks instead. Farfetch'd cannot live without its stick for unknown reasons, and will defend their stick with their life. The stick is also known to be used as nesting material and as a weapon. In case of an emergency situation where the Farfetch'd is starving, it will eat its own stick and hurry off to find a new one.

They are known to be picky in the kinds of sticks they accept. Farfetch'd have been known to fight each other over one 'good' stalk.

Habitat

Farfetch'd are found in grasslands, but it always has to be near water. Farfetch'd are also very good swimmers and are often found swimming in ponds.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Farfetch'd are an omnivorous species and will usually eat weeds and water plants.

Minor Appearances

In A Way Off, Day Off, Farfetch'd lived on a deserted island which is the home of many different fruit trees.

In Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl, multiple Farfetch'd appeared when Crystal whistles.

In Smells Like Team Spirit, a Farfetch'd was used by Brock's battle partner Holly against Ash and Paul.

Wilkinson used a Farfetch'd in the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament in To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!.

Trivia

  • In numerical order, Farfetch'd is the first Pokémon in the National Pokédex that does not have an evolution family, and has always been. It is also one of several remaining Generation I Pokémon, excluding legendaries, that does not evolve into or from something in later generations, along with Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Tauros, Lapras, Ditto, and Aerodactyl.
  • Farfetch'd can learn Fury Cutter by level up in Generation III, but it is incompatible with the Generation III move tutor that teaches the same move. It can, however, learn it through a move tutor in Platinum.
  • Farfetch'd is one of the few Pokémon to continuously carry something they pick up or find. Others include Cubone, Marowak and Spoink.
  • Farfetch'd is the only Pokémon with an apostrophe in its name.
  • Farfetch'd is so far the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 352.
  • According to the anime, Farfetch'd are rare because of over-hunting them for food. Counting Miltank's milk and Tropius's fruit, Farfetch'd is one of the few Pokémon confirmed to be used in some way for food.

Origin

Farfetch'd's origin might come from legends of a duck that carries a leek coming to lost and starving travelers in forests, offering itself to be eaten.

Name origin

Farfetch'd's name comes from the word farfetched, which means unbelievable. It could also refer to the game of fetch, which animals play using sticks. Its Japanese name is a combination of 鴨 kamo, wild duck, and 葱 negi, spring onion. Additionally, 鴨葱 kamonegi is an abbreviation of 鴨が葱をしょって来る, a duck comes bearing spring onions.

In other languages

  • German: Porenta - A combination of Porree (leek) and Ente (duck).
  • French: Canarticho - From canard (duck) and artichau (artichoke), a reference to the vegetable in its hand.
  • Korean: 파오리 Paori - From "파" (pa, onion/scallion) and "오리" (ori, duck).
  • Chinese (Hong Kong): 火蔥鴨 - 火蔥, Shallot, and 蔥 is the chinese word of 葱.
