Trivia

  • Drifloon is the first Generation IV Pokémon to be shown in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • In the Japanese version of Pearl's Pokédex entry, Drifloon specifically take children to the "world of the dead" (Japanese: あのよ), instead of just trying to "steal them away" as in the English version. This was likely changed to comply with Nintendo's usual "kid-friendly" policy (Unfortunately, this "stealing away of young children" has made Drifloon the butt of many pedophilia jokes). However, in the US release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the description provided along with Drifloon's trophy still states taking children to the underworld
  • Drifloon shares the same species name with Jigglypuff's evolutionary family and Qwilfish. They are all known as Balloon Pokémon.
  • Drifloon is one of nine non-Bug, Flying-type Pokémon that cannot learn Fly.

Origin

Drifloon are based on balloons.

Name origin

Drifloon's name is a combination of drift and balloon. Its Japanese name, Fuwante, may be derived from ふわふわ fuwa fuwa, meaning soft, fluffy, and light, or an onomatopoeia for floating, and 風船 fūsen, balloon. Its German name, Driftlon, comes from Drift and Ballon. Its French name, Baudrive, comes from baudruche and dérive. Its Korean name, 흔들풍선, comes from words 'drift, shake' (흔들다, heundeul-da ['da' is a suffix for verbs, with no real meaning]) and balloon (풍선, poongsun)
