Release information

This card was released in the English Base Set, first originating from the Japanese Expansion Pack. This card was included in the Trainer Deck A, which was given to prototype Pokémon Leagues before the Base Set's official release. All of the cards in this deck have red borders and "Trainer Deck A" printed on the backs. It was reprinted in the English Base Set 2 expansion, the Japanese Hanada, Kuchiba, Tamamushi, and Yamabuki City Gym theme decks, and the Totodile Half Deck of the Japanese Intro Pack Neo.

It was later reprinted in the English Undaunted expansion with new artwork by Ryo Ueda, originating from the Japanese Reviving Legends expansion. It was given an errata alongside the release of Black and White so that it now protects against damage from all attacks, not just opponents' attacks.

An errata released alongside Black and White says that the card should read "by attacks" instead of "by an opponent's attack".

Trivia

Origin

Defender's Japanese name is that of the X Defend, an item in the Pokémon games. The Japanese name of the item was either used for the English card by mistake, or was intentionally used as "Defender" is inscribed on the side of the object in the card's original artwork.
