Cyndaquil (Japanese: ヒノアラシ Hinoarashi) is a Fire-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Quilava starting at level 14, who evolves into Typhlosion starting at level 36.

Along with Chikorita and Totodile, it is one of the three starter Pokémon available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

Contents

Biology

Cyndaquil is a timid Pokémon. It lives in groups and tends to hide in dangerous situations. Most Cyndaquil, like Ash's, are inexperienced at start and don't know their strengths and weaknesses.

Physiology

Its fur is bluish on top of its body, but a milky color on the underside. Although called the Fire Mouse Pokémon, Cyndaquil seems to be a composite of features from the echidna, seen in the flames erupting from its back, and the shrew, the general shape of its body. Its eyes are often closed, as it is still young. It has four spots from which its flames erupt. It lacks claws on its forelimbs, but has a single claw on each hind foot.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Cyndaquil is capable of defending itself by using the fire on its back. The fire grows more powerful as the Cyndaquil becomes more angry or defensive.

Behavior

Cyndaquil are usually timid, but its actual behavior depends on its personality.

Habitat

Cyndaquil can adapt to many habitats, however, most are found in the care of Trainers, having been their starter Pokémon.

In the anime

Cyndaquil in the anime

Cyndaquil first appeared in the anime in Don't Touch That 'dile as one of the three starters Professor Elm had to give out at his lab.

Ash Ketchum captured a Cyndaquil in Good 'Quil Hunting. During its early days on Ash's team, Cyndaquil was easily tired-out (e.g. waiting a while for the flames on its back to ignite so it could use Fire-type attacks). Eventually, Cyndaquil got over its shortcomings. Ash left his Cyndaquil, along with the rest of his Johto team (save for Pikachu), at Professor Oak's lab when he set out for Hoenn.

Jimmy chose Cyndaquil as his starter Pokémon. By The Legend of Thunder!, it had become a Typhlosion.

Lucy has a pet Cyndaquil.

A Cyndaquil is owned by one of the students of Snowpoint Trainers' School in Classroom Training!.

Cyndaquil has a role in Arceus and the Jewel of Life alongside the other Johto starters, Chikorita and Totodile.

In DP143, Dawn defeated Kotone in a battle, winning an egg. Shortly after, the egg hatched into a Cyndaquil.

Pokédex entries

Episode Pokémon Pokédex Entry
EP141 Cyndaquil Ash's Pokédex Cyndaquil, the Fire Mouse Pokémon. Normally mild and even tempered, Cyndaquil will shoot a scorching flame out of its back when upset.
This concludes the entries from the original series.

In the manga

In Pokémon Adventures, Gold took the Cyndaquil from Professor Elm's lab to try to catch the thief Silver. He named the Cyndaquil "Explotaro" for the explosive fire from its back.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Cyndaquil will aim a Flamethrower diagonally towards the ground in one direction. It is one of the easiest Pokémon to avoid, however. It can also be knocked off the screen.

Trophy information

Cyndaquil frighten easily, so they're often found curled up in balls. When threatened, they flare the flames on their backs to drive off enemies. Cyndaquil was one of the three Pokémon that Trainers could choose from at the beginning of Pokémon Silver, Gold, and Crystal. No one knows if their eyes are open.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Cyndaquil is not a Poké Ball item anymore. It is only a trophy.

Trophy information

A Fire Mouse Pokémon. It's a timid creature that often curls up into a ball. When threatened, it flares up the flames on its back to scare off enemies. When it's angry, it can produce powerful flames, but when it's tired, it has trouble producing fire and suffers from incomplete combustion. When it levels up, it evolves into Quilava. Its squinty eyes are adorable.

Game data

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Hitting Cyndaquil will knock it back. After a few hits, Cyndaquil will knocked into the Egg stand and the flame on its back will start heating the egg. Hitting Cyndaquil one more time will cause the egg to hatch and the player will have a chance to catch the newly hatched Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Cyndaquil and its evolutions are the only Pokémon that were not introduced in Generation I that can legally have Submission. Despite this, it can only learn it by breeding in Generation II only, and even then only in Crystal.
  • Cyndaquil is so far the only Fire-type starter Pokémon that is not primarily red or orange. This holds true for its evolutions, but not its shiny form.
  • Cyndaquil is the only Fire-type starter that does not gain a secondary type during evolution all the way up to its final form.
    • Cyndaquil's line and the Magby line are the only Fire-type families with three stages that never gain a second type.
  • Cyndaquil along with Chimchar, are the only two starter Pokémon that evolve at level 14, the lowest level starters evolve at. Coincidentally, both are the Fire-type choice in the regions introduced in an even-numbered generation, and both are the only mammal-inspired starter Pokémon in any generation save for Pikachu in the special Yellow version.
  • Cyndaquil is the second starter Pokémon to be seen hatching from an egg in the anime, the first being Mudkip.

Origin

Its appearance is based on the echidna.

Name origin

Cyndaquil's name is a combination of the words cinder, meaning ashes, and quill, referring to needle-like hairs. Hinoarashi could be taken to mean 火の嵐, storm of fire, but it is likely to also be based on 山荒 yama-arashi, porcupine.

In other languages

  • German: Feurigel - From Feuer (fire) and Igel (hedgehog).
  • French: Hericendre - From hérisson (hedgehog) and cendre (cinder).
  • Korean: 브케인 Bukein (Bucane)
