Cleffa (Japanese: ピィ Py) is a Fairy-type baby Pokémon introduced in Generation II. Prior to Generation VI, it was a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Clefairy when leveled up with high friendship, which evolves into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Biology

Cleffa is a small, pink Pokémon that is vaguely star-shaped in appearance. Its ears are completely brown. Cleffa has two small black eyes and a small mouth, and it appears to have a small, permanent blush on its cheeks. It possesses stubby arms and legs, which have no defined digits and come to a point. It has a curl on its forehead and a curled-up tail.

Cleffa lives in mountainous regions, typically found at meteor impact sites. Sightings of Cleffa become more likely during nights illuminated by shooting stars, where they dance the night away; this dance is said to bring good fortune to any who witness it. They quench their thirst the next morning by drinking dew. It is fascinated by anything resembling stars and meteors, such as Minior. Because of this, as well as its own star-shaped silhouette, Cleffa is commonly believed to have arrived on a shooting star. The anime showed that its evolved forms (and therefore Cleffa itself) are actually extraterrestrial Pokémon.

Prior to Generation V, Cleffa and its evolved forms were the only known Pokémon that could have Magic Guard as an Ability.

Evolution

Cleffa evolves into Clefairy, which evolves into Clefable.

I’m sure you noticed those Cleffa dancing inside the cave with a view of the night sky. It’s said that Cleffa first arrived here in ancient times, riding on a meteor.

Trivia

  • Cleffa shares its category with Staryu. They are both known as Star Shape Pokémon.
  • Cleffa is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 218.
  • Cleffa is tied with Pawmi and Greavard for having the shortest Japanese name of all Pokémon, being spelt with only two kana.
    • Cleffa is tied with Cramorant for the shortest Japanese Pokémon name in trademarked romaji, with only two letters.
  • Cleffa is tied with Igglybuff and Morelull for the lowest base Speed stat of all Fairy-type Pokémon.
  • Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Togepi are the only baby Pokémon to have a TAG TEAM GX card.

Origin

Cleffa seems to be based on fairies and pixies since it is a small, playful, magical creature. It may also be inspired by the concept of extraterrestrial life due to its rumored celestial origins and vaguely star-shaped body. It may also reference the mythical Moon rabbit due to its large ears and the fact that it reaches its final evolved form using a Moon Stone.

Name origin

Cleffa may be a combination of clef (musical symbol) and the first two letters of fairy or fable; fa may also be derived from the popular western musical teaching method solfa (i.e. do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti).

Py may be a truncation of pixie.
