Celebi (Japanese: セレビィ Celebi) is a dual-type Psychic/Grass legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Celebi is the last Pokémon in the Johto Dex and Hoenn Dex, although in the latter, Celebi is not shown.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Celebi is a green fairy-like creature. Celebi has round toe-less feet, three-fingered hands, and clear wings on its back. Celebi has a round head that comes to a point and sticks upward in the back, large baby-blue eyes with black rings around them, and a pair of green antennae that are tipped blue.

Gender differences

Celebi is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Celebi has the power to travel through time. Celebi can restore plants to perfect health (an ability that is also accredited to Meganium}. Celebi mainly attacks with surprisingly powerful Grass and Psychic attacks.

Behavior

Celebi, like Mew, is a very playful species in general. Celebi are extremely powerful despite their small size, another trait they have in common with Mew. Celebi also can be very timid, not wanting to show themselves despite their awesome power. Although multiple Celebi have been seen at one time, it is unknown if they are different individuals or the same Celebi from different time periods. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to determine exactly how many Celebi exist.

Habitat

Because Celebi travels through time, it may inhabit many places. However, Celebi is generally associated with forests. Because of this, it is known as the spirit and guardian of the forest.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Celebi feed on berries.

In the anime

Celebi from Pokémon 4Ever

Celebi first appeared in Celebi: Voice of the Forest. A Pokémon hunter was after it and Celebi traveled 40 years into future to escape from him, taking young Sam along with it accidentally. Vicious eventually captured the time traveling Pokémon in a Dark Ball and used it to destroy the forest. Ash and Sammy managed to snap Celebi out of the Iron Masked Marauder's control.

Celebi also made an appearance in Pokémon Chronicles. In Celebi and Joy, Celebi took Ritchie back in time to help stop the destruction of a Pokémon Center.

In Green Guardian, the Pokémon Ranger Solana accompanied Ash and friends in helping the Pokémon.

A Celebi appeared in the boss fantasy of A Lean Mean Team Rocket Machine.

Celebi makes a cameo appearance in the beginning of The Rise of Darkrai.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Pryce aimed to capture Celebi and use its time-traveling powers to save his two Lapras, which he had lost years ago prior to the start of the GSC saga.

Near the end of the RS Saga, Ruby is revealed to have a Celebi. He explains that due to the lack of information he had on it, he rarely uses Celebi at all. Celebi was used to retrieve the Red and Blue Orbs from Maxie and Archie, to prevent them from ever controlling Groudon and Kyogre again. Then, it revived Norman, Steven, and Magma Admin Courtney by sending them through an altered future.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl

When a Poké Ball is thrown, there is a 1 in 251 chance of Celebi appearing after all these requirements have been fulfilled:

  • Unlock all 25 characters
  • Unlock all 29 stages
  • Beat all 51 events
  • Unlock the score display (by reaching 5000 KOs.)

It does not affect the battle but the thrower of the Poké Ball will earn a bonus and trophy of Celebi.

Celebi returns as a rare Pokémon in Brawl as well; the chance of it appearing is decreased to 1 in 493. Like the other "secret" Pokémon, it drops rare items instead of just flying away. In Celebi's case, the items are Trophies.

Spoiler warning: this article may contain major plot or ending details.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: A shiny Celebi is a supporting protagonist in the main storyline. When the player and partner are sent to the future by Dusknoir, the player, partner, and Grovyle work together to get back to the past. Celebi was the Pokémon who sent Grovyle to the past before, and the trio receive her help to go back again.

Trivia

  • Celebi was the only Pokémon of the 100 Generation II Pokémon that wasn't used in the Johto Pokérap.
  • In a deleted scene of the movie Austin Powers in Goldmember, a person in a Celebi suit can be seen dancing.
  • Celebi is notably the hardest Pokémon to obtain, as there are very few ways to legitimately obtain one outside of Japan.
  • Celebi has the most weaknesses of all Pokémon, with seven. It shares this with Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Snover, and Abomasnow, all of which are part Grass-type.
  • While Celebi has the power of time travel, it cannot control time, a power belonging to Dialga.
  • Unlike most legendaries, Celebi needs only 1,059,860 Exp. to get to level 100, whereas others need 1,250,000. It shares this trait with Mew and Shaymin. Shaymin's Sky Forme is the only of these Pokémon to not have 100 for all of their base stats.
  • During the main story of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2, the Shiny Celebi is referred to as a female, while it is genderless in the main series.
  • A 2008 interview done with Masamitsu Hidaka by the webmaster of PokéBeach revealed that the GS Ball was initially meant to contain a Celebi that would be used in a story arc throughout the Johto series. This idea, however, was shelved, and Celebi became a co-star of Celebi: Voice of the Forest with Suicune.
  • Celebi's number in the National Dex and the New Pokédex are the same: 251. This makes it one of fifteen Pokémon to have the same numbers in more than one Pokédex-like listing. The other fourteen are all members of the Bulbasaur, Ralts, Goldeen, and Beldum evolutionary families and the legendary beasts.
  • Celebi's ability to bring life back to forests is similar to Shaymin, the only other Grass-type legendary Pokémon.

Origin

It may be based on a fairy or dryad.

Name origin

There are many theories as to the origin of Celebi's name. It may be a combination of celestial and being, or it may be a combination of the English serenity and the Japanese bii, which translates to beautiful. It may also come from celery, due to the fact that Celebi is a Grass-type.

Celebi's name may also be based on Ceres, the Roman god of agriculture. There is also the possibility its name originates from "cerebral", referring to its psychic powers.
