Budew (Japanese: スボミー Subomie) is a dual-type Grass/Poison baby Pokémon.

It evolves into Roselia via happiness during the day, who evolves into Roserade via Shiny Stone.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Nando's Budew about to use SolarBeam; note the spots in Budew's vines are blue and red

At first glance, Budew barely has any similarities to its evolved forms, Roselia and Roserade. However, when the two "vines" that are on top of Budew's head open up, a big spot can be seen on each vine (one that is blue and the other being red). As a matter of fact, the two vines are actually what will be the Pokémon's flower-holding arms when it evolves into Roselia. Budew also appears to be wearing a green bib. This will become a skirt once it evolves.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Budew can basically do almost anything Roselia and Roserade are capable of, but its abilities are usually weaker. However, the Water Sport and Worry Seed attacks can only be learned by Budew.

Behavior

Budew usually like sunlight, warmth, and clear ponds to live close to. Budew are very sensitive to climate and temperature changes. In the spring, it releases pollen from the bud on top of its head which opens in the sunlight. The pollen can make people sneeze and have runny noses. In the winter, the bud closes to endure the cold.

Habitat

Budew live close to freshwater ponds.

Another appeared in Oh Do You Know The Poffin Plan in Forsythia's flashback, which later became her Roserade.

Several Budew made an appearance in The Rise of Darkrai.

A Budew was also seen under Reggie's care in Lost Leader Strategy!.

It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

Trivia

  • When the Japanese title of Dawn of a New Era! was revealed, Budew hadn't yet been revealed to the public, causing confusion.
  • When a shiny Budew opens the vines on its head in the back sprite animation, the spots on the vines are shown to be red and blue. This is in contrast to the alternate coloration of its evolved forms which have purple and black roses.

Origin

Budew is based on a rose bud.

Name origin

Its name is derived from bud and dew. The name Subomie is a corruption of 蕾 tsubomi, flower bud.

In other languages

  • German: Knospi - From Knospe (bud).
  • French: Rozbouton - From rose and bouton (bud).
  • Korean: 꼬몽울 Kkomong'ul
  • Chinese: 露水芽
