Mt. Mortar

Mt Mortar

Mt. Mortar is a large cave situated along Route 42, between Ecruteak City and Mahogany Town. While the area is entirely optional, this is the only place where you can acquire a Tyrogue, as well as other rare Pokémon. To be fully prepared for the cave, bring a team with no more than 5 Pokémon, including creatures with the HM moves Surf, Strength, Waterfall, and Rock Climb. Fly to either Ecruteak or Mahogany, and travel to Route 42 to reach the mountain.

West/East Entrance

As you step inside the western entrance, use your Dowsing MCHN to locate a hidden Hyper Potion. Climb the steps and enter the rear cave to reach the main cavern.

Lower Cave

Make a left turn, climb up the walkway, and take the ladder to reach an Ether.

Back in the lower cave, head back towards the entrance, but continue east. Fight past Poké Maniac Harrison, and climb to the stairway to the ladder in the east; grab the Revive before returning to the central cavern.

Walk to the west, and you'll find a movable boulder — shove that aside, pick up the hidden Max Repel that is beside the boulder by using your Dowsing MCHN, and continue north. Soon you'll see stairs on your left, walk up those and grab the Ultra Ball on the ledge. Northeast of that is a Max Potion lying near some dark rocks. Step up onto the ledge, and follow that to the tall walkway to the east; you'll find a Nugget to the north. Head back south to find an Escape Rope. Step down off of the ledge and head south, where you'll find Super Nerd Markus. Head south, jump the ledges, and leave through the eastern exit.

Center Entrance

Climb down the ladder in front of you to take a detour for a group of items.

Surf to the east to find a Full Restore. Swim to the northeast to reach a Max Ether. Surf to the west in a large U-shape to grab a Hyper Potion. West of here is a moveable boulder, but you cannot move it far enough north to step out around it. Continue south of here, and jump onto the first eastern shore to grab a PP Up. Now swim south and jump on to the western shore. Look for an Ultra Ball hidden in the rock wall, and swim north for a Carbos. Swim south then east, jump the ledge, and climb the ladder.

Surf to the north to find a huge cascading waterfall. Use the Waterfall move to scale it, and enter the cave to the north.

Upper Cave

Surf to the west to get a Rare Candy. Swim back east, then head north to fight Super Nerd Hugh. Continue east, and swim north across the first pond — you'll find a Max Potion sitting on a rocky ledge. Head south, and surf across two more small ponds to reach the eastern wall. Wade out into the center pond along the east wall, then turn to the west. Follow the pathway, jump the ledge, and continue to the west. Swim north across another pond, then jump south over the first ledge you see to reach TM40 (Aerial Ace). Jump the ledge and loop around to the north again — this time, walk all the way to the east, then surf north across another pond. Pick up the Escape Rope on the rocky ledge, then surf across the northeast pond to reach the northern wall. Jump down the second ledge you see to obtain a Dragon Scale. Jump the last ledge, head west to find an Elixir, then swim across the nearby pond to reach a ladder in the northwest.

Lower Cave

Navigate around the group of small rock platforms, picking up an Iron and a hidden Ether before heading east. Climb down the eastern stairway and head south to find an Iron Ball. Step back up onto the rock platform and walk to the southwest. Grab the Max Revive, and climb down the ladder to reach B1F.

Walk down the first stairway and head east. Check the lone rock for another Max Revive, step down the stairway to the east to find the Karate King of Saffron's Fighting Dojo. If you defeat his two Fighting-types, he will reward you with a Tyrogue, a rare Fighting-type that can evolve into either Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop.

Now that you've got your Tyrogue, you can use an Escape Rope to exit the cave quickly; otherwise, climb back onto the rock platform, head south, shove the boulder, and surf south to the ladder to the central exit.
