????? appears in Generation II games. It is the result of forcing a nonexistent Pokémon numbered 000, 252, 254, or 255 to appear, though it has been encountered in the wild during normal play. Although all these numbers appear identical (as just a nonsensical assortment of various graphics from other parts of the game), they each use a different palette, so #252 appears gold, #000 appears blue, and so on.

When viewing the status screen of any ?????, it may not render correctly and may even cause the game to stop functioning correctly. Usually the status screen reports an abnormal value under "level up" that indicates the quantity required to reach the next level. Different forms have different types. It will also display that it is a shiny Pokémon.

All variations of ????? lack their own battle sprites besides the one seen by the trainer battling it. When a trainer uses any variation of ?????, it will borrow the last sprite used in the battle area, be it the original trainer that appears before the battle starts, or another Pokémon that has been switched out. Any of these will have the color palette that the particular form of ????? uses.

It has no readable Pokédex data, however it has a footprint. The footprint is identical to that of Donphan, with the exception that the numbers 000, 252, 254, and 255 are printed in the middle of it for the appropriate Pokémon.
