Zangoose (Japanese: ザングース Zangoose) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is well known for its ongoing feud against Seviper.

Biology

Physiology

Zangoose are fairly large Pokémon that have the characteristics of both mongooses and cats. Their fur is mostly white in color, but they possess deep red markings on the face, chest, and forepaws, which have sharp turns and edges. These markings make it appear that Zangoose has been involved in a vicious fight and is covered in blood and scars. They have two apparently retractable, long, sharp, black claws on their forepaws that are their main weapons in battle. Zangoose have large pink eyes, small tufts of white fur on their shoulders, somewhat rabbitlike ears, and a large, furry, white tail. They also have a pattern of four pink circles on the underside of their hind feet in a "paw-pad"-like arrangement. When a Zangoose opens its mouth, two sharp fangs can be seen.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Behavior

Zangoose are bitter enemies with Seviper, and the two will battle each other to the end. It is suggested this rivalry has lasted for ages. It will usually walk on all fours, but when angry, it will stand on its hind legs.

Habitat

This Pokémon is found on Route 114 in Hoenn, and more rarely on Route 210 and Route 11, so it presumably prefers to live in mountainous areas with grass, trees, and flowing rivers with waterfalls.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Zangoose is an active hunter, and its prey may include Seviper.

Major appearances

Zangoose first appeared in ZigZag Zangoose under the control of Nicholai.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness, Zangoose was a member of Team Razor Wind, along with Scyther and Sandslash. The trio of clawed Pokémon were first seen being blasted out of the Wigglytuff Guild. Team Razor Wind overheard that Team Poképals were assigned with the task of traveling to the Labyrinth Cave to get a Gabite Scale for an ailing Shinx, and decided to attempt beating Team Poképals. Unfortunately for Team Razor Wind, Gabite beat them up. It reappeared alongside its team in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness.

In Tears For Fears! another group of Zangoose appeared before Team Rocket and fought with Jessie's Seviper. Later, Chimchar found the courage to defeat them.

Minor appearances

A Zangoose appeared in the opening of Destiny Deoxys and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

In Glory Blaze, it is discovered that Paul found Chimchar being attacked by a group of Zangoose. Because of the amazing power it used fighting the Zangoose, Paul decided to capture it. Later, Chimchar was to fight another Zangoose and nearly lost to it.

A powerful Zangoose appeared in Beating the Bustle and Hustle! under the ownership of Crimson.

Zangoose in Pokémon Adventure

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

In the Ruby & Sapphire arc of Pokémon Adventures, Zangoose first appears in VS. Zangoose & Seviper I, where it fought against its sworn enemy. However, both of them soon noticed that Ruby and the swimmer he was with were watching, and then proceeded to attack them together. With Ruby's three party Pokémon's balls broken from their claws and fangs, it looked hopeless before the Feebas he fished earlier saved the two with a Light Screen. Despite Ruby's protests, it was this feat that had the "ugly" fish join his party.

Zangoose appeared later on as Elite Four Sidney's only Pokémon, despite the fact that he specializes in the Dark type.

In the Pokémon Battle Frontier manga

Enta obtained a Zangoose before he entered the Battle Frontier.

Trivia

  • Although it is stated that Seviper and Zangoose are bitter enemies, they share several characteristics, such as being in the Field Egg Group, residing in the same Friend Area, and having a base stat total of 458 (which is unique to only them).
  • Every one of Zangoose's Pokédex entries mention Seviper.
  • Zangoose and Seviper also have the exact opposite Experience group, with Zangoose being in the Erratic group and Seviper being in the Fluctuating group.
  • Despite its sharp claws, as well as the basis of its name (see below), Zangoose is unable to learn Cut.
  • Before Generation IV, Zangoose was the only Pokémon to learn Crush Claw by leveling up.
  • Zangoose is compatible with the Generation III Move Tutor that teaches Thunder Wave, but not the TM that teaches the move that was introduced in Generation IV.
  • Zangoose is the only Hoenn-dex Pokémon not present in Sapphire or Emerald versions. Like Lunatone (which can not be found in Ruby or Emerald), it can be found in XD.

Origin

Zangoose, as its name implies, is based on a mongoose, as well as cats. It bears the most physical resemblance to the Angolan and Persian breeds. The rivalry it shares with Seviper is based on the relationship between both cats and mongooses towards snakes.

Name origin

Zangoose is a combination of 刪 san (cut down) and mongoose (a small, cat-like carnivore that is well known for its ability to hunt and kill venomous snakes). It may also derive from 残痕 zankon (scar, due to the markings in its body). Alternatively, it may be a combination of mongoose with zangado (Portuguese for angry, due to its ferocious behavior and look).
