The Zygarde known by Team Flare by the code name Z2 (Japanese: Z2 Z2) is a recurring Pokémon character in the anime who was a central figure of the XY&Z arc of the XY series.
History
Z2 first appeared in From A to Z!, where it was attacked by Mable, a group of Team Flare Grunts, and their Pokémon. Z2 countered their attacks with Land's Wrath, and escaped its pursuers. It was later seen outside Terminus Cave, watching the sun rise.
It reappeared in Meeting at Terminus Cave! as a Zygarde Core where Squishy contacted it.
In An Explosive Operation!, Z2 was cornered by Mable, Aliana, and a trio of Grunts under their command. When it tried to escape via camouflage, it was hit by Team Flare's special ray gun, stunning it and disabling its cloaking. To overcome this, Z2 entered 10% Forme and used Extreme Speed to fend off the scientists' Weavile and Druddigon, and make its escape. After reverting to a Zygarde Core Z2 ran into Team Rocket, who had recently set their sights on Squishy. Discovering that there were two Zygarde Cores, the trio tried to capture Z2 themselves, but were stopped by Team Flare. Jessie, James, and Meowth protected Z2 from Team Flare's ray gun, which was then destroyed by Inkay. Jessie then used Gourgeist's Seed Bomb to escape with the Zygarde Core.
Exhausted from their escape, Team Rocket let Z2 recover by allowing it to take energy from the sun. Soon after recovering, however, they were once again found by Team Flare. Although the trio fought hard, Gourgeist and Inkay were eventually defeated. Left with little options, Z2 transformed into its 50% Forme and fought back with Dragon Pulse and Land's Wrath, overpowering Team Flare's Pokémon. Before Z2 could finish off Team Flare, it was stopped by a Flamethrower from Alain's Charizard. Alain and his Mega Charizard X battled against Z2, covering for Mable and Aliana. While able to fend off Charizard, it was eventually surrounded by the two scientists, who proceeded to stun it with full-power blasts from their ray guns and sapping its strength. After blasting away Team Rocket, Z2 was secured by Mable, who deemed the operation a success. Z2 was later seen at Lysandre Labs, glaring at Lysandre.
Z2 reappeared in Unlocking Some Respect, where Xerosic began experimenting on it and in Championing a Research Battle! where Xerosic and Lysandre were observing it.
It reappeared in A Full Strength Battle Surprise! where it watched Xerosic perform an experiment somewhere in a forest, using multiple Zygarde Cells, from the Lysandre Labs, along with Lysandre himself.
It also reappeared in Seeing the Forest for the Trees! where it was listening to Squishy talk about Ash and his Greninja.
In XY129, Z2 was moved into Lumiose Gym with several Zygarde Cells in preparation for the climax of Team Flare's plans.
In XY131, Z2 was placed under influence of Team Flare by Xerosic's Zygarde Cell-powered invention. After reaching the summit of Prism Tower, it transformed into its 50% Forme, unleashing massive vines through the city and the stadium, interrupting the ending ceremony. The episode ends by showing Z2, now having a bright red aura and coloration instead of bright green, indicating that it is now under full influence of Lysandre and Xerosic. In the next episode, Z2 continued to spread vines over Lumiose City and did not respond to Squishy's calls. When confronted atop Prism Tower by Squishy in 10% Forme. Z2 launched a Dragon Pulse at Squishy and knocked it down from the tower. After Squishy transformed into its 50% Forme, Z2 jumped down from the tower to battle with it. Z2 took some harsh attacks from Squishy during there battle in XY133. However, Z2 was eventually able to constrict Squishy between its giant roots while Xerosic launched the Mega Evolution energy weapon and gained control of Squishy. Both Zygarde continued their rampage.
In the the following episode, it was freed from Lysandre's control.
In XY135 and XY136, it and Squishy, together, combined into their Complete Form and used Core Enforcer to destroy the Megalith Zygarde, then both of them said goodbye to Ash and his friends, and disappeared with each other.
Personality and characteristics
Unlike Squishy, Z2 greatly distrusts humans. In A Cellular Connection!, Z2 suggested that it and Squishy completely seclude themselves from humankind. When Squishy disagreed, Z2 asserted that humans disrupt the order they exist to maintain, and are a threat to Kalos. It has a blue core, as opposed to Squishy's red core. This distrust was exploited by Lysandre, who gained control over Z2 and used it to attack Lumiose City from the top of Prism Tower. Even after it was freed from Team Flare's control by Clemont, Z2 still showed a great amount of mistrust towards humans. It would take the combined efforts of Ash and his friends fighting alongside Alain, Steven Stone, Diantha, the Kalos Gym Leaders, Meyer, and Malva to show Z2 that humans were not disruptors of order, but rather protectors of it.
