Yawn (Japanese: あくび Yawn) is a non-damaging Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation III.

Effect

In the turn that Yawn is used, the only effect will be the user yawning at the target. At the end of the next turn, the target will fall asleep unless it gets affected by another status condition before or a status-protecting move is used (like Safeguard or Uproar).

Yawn will fail immediately if the target is under any other major status condition, or when used against a Pokémon with Insomnia or Vital Spirit as its ability.

The user lets loose a huge yawn, releasing varying amounts of bubbles that float over and pop in the opponent's face, causing them to fall asleep.

Slugma Slugma opens its mouth and releases a large pink bubble from its mouth. The bubble floats over to the opponent and pops in its face, making it fall asleep.
Flannery's Meg Going, Going, Yawn Debut
Snorlax Snorlax opens its mouth and releases multiple pink bubbles. When the bubbles burst in the opponent's face, it becomes drowsy and falls asleep.
Marcel's Snorlax The Garden of Eatin' None
Slowbro Slowbro opens its mouth and releases a blue bubble at the opponent. The bubble then pops in the opponent's face. When it pops, its body glows yellow-green and it falls asleep.
Solidad's Slowbro Channeling the Battle Zone! None
Hippopotas Hippopotas opens its mouth and releases a clear bubble from it at the opponent. The bubble pops in the opponent's face, and after a couple minutes, the opponent falls asleep.

Trivia

  • 400 years before the events of Generation II, a drought hit Azalea Town in Johto. A Slowpoke yawned, and the rain came. This is why it is so honored in Azalea. This, however, has nothing to do with the in-game effect of the move Yawn, nor the innate abilities of Slowpoke.
    • Similarly, Kingdra's yawn is said to cause whirlpools to form, which is not the case in battle.
