Yawn (Japanese: あくび Yawn) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation III.

Effect

Generations III and IV

Yawn makes the target drowsy. At the end of the next turn, the drowsy Pokémon will fall asleep, unless it is already afflicted by a non-volatile status condition. If a drowsy Pokémon switches out, it loses its drowsiness. Drowsiness can be passed by Baton Pass.

Yawn bypasses accuracy checks to always hit, unless the opponent is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Dig or Fly.

Yawn will fail if the target is already afflicted by a major status condition or behind a substitute. It also cannot affect a Pokémon with the Ability Insomnia or Vital Spirit.

Yawn will also fail if used during an uproar. However, a Pokémon that is already drowsy can still fall asleep during an uproar.

Generation V onward

Yawn will no longer fail if used during an uproar. However, drowsiness can no longer cause a Pokémon to fall asleep during an uproar.

Generation VI

Yawn will fail if used on a target with the Sweet Veil Ability, or their allies (including non-adjacent allies). Sweet Veil will also prevent allies already drowsy due to Yawn from falling asleep.
