Yawn (Japanese: あくび Yawn) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation III.

Effect

In the turn that Yawn is used, the only effect will be the user yawning at the target. At the end of the next turn, the target (if still active) will fall asleep unless it gets affected by a major status condition in the meantime, a status-protecting move is used (like Uproar), or the battle ends.

Yawn will fail immediately if the target has a substitute, a major status condition, or when used against a Pokémon with Insomnia or Vital Spirit as its Ability.

If a Pokémon is afflicted by status condition (including sleep) while affected by Yawn, then cured from it before Yawn would cause it to fall asleep, Yawn's effect proceeds as normal.

Trivia

  • Although Slowpoke's yawn is said to summon rain (according to history of the Slowpoke Well in Azalea Town), and Kingdra's yawn is said to cause whirlpools to form, neither of these are the case in battle.
  • Yawn is the only move whose name begins with the letter Y.
  • Its basis stems from the phenomenon of how yawns are contagious from person to person.
