The participating Trainers inaugurate the Lumiose Conference. Ash and gang arrive in Lumiose City, and it's finally the time for the biggest showdown. Familiar faces are spotted, such as Alain, Trevor, Tierno, and Sawyer. In a surprise interview from Malva, Ash states why he is here: to be the very best, and reach the apex of his pursuit of power, as a Pokemon Trainer.

However, a red-head Trainer, with a Kabuki Trim Furfrou is spotted who gives a disrespectful sneer to Ash's optimism, and challenges him to a battle, skeptical of his capabilities. Being carried away by his enthusiasm, Ash almost accepts the challenge, but is immediately held back by the rest of the gang, who admonish him for not being very prudent and worry about arriving late. However, they exchange pep-talks with fellow competitors like Tierno and Alain. The next day, the grand ceremony is unfurled. Champion Diantha delivers an encouraging speech, and towards the end, fireworks are displayed.

The computer had randomly matched up 64 Trainers against each other the previous day, and Ash is to face a Trainer named Tomo, while Alain and Trevor are pitted against each other. The matches commence accordingly, with the first battle being that of Alain and Trevor.

Both the trainers send out their Charizard.Trevor opens with the Fire Spin, which is tactically evaded by Alain's Charizard. And the latter retaliates with Flamethrower, which Trevor's counters with Dragon Claw. Lost in the fierceness of the battle,Trevor invokes the fullest potential of his pokemon, and mega evolves it.Sharp ridges appear on its body, its wings become angular and serrated, and it is transformed into Mega Charizard Y! Its first attack is again skillfully dodged by Alain's,and he decides to fight fire with fire. His keystone corresponds to Charizard's heart, and it unleashes its Mega Charizard X form. Mega Charizard X completely outmatches all three of Trevor's pokemon,(an Aerodactyl and Florges comprising the rest of his roster)and the latter's further progress in the league is nipped in the bud.The spectators are awestruck and gape-faced,witnessing the superiority and unparalleled stamina of Alain. Meanwhile,Ash reaches the pathway that leads to the stadium, being summoned to turn up for his match against Tomo, but is interfered by a familiar face-Takeru,the Furfrou trainer, who immediately challenges him to a battle,in exchange of letting him pass.Provided with no other choice,Ash agrees, and pits his Pikachu against the red-head trainer's Furfrou. After exchanging a flurry of destructive attacks,Pikachu emerges victorious, and Takeru sags down to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably, and he requests Ash to win the league, and the young boy of Pallet town nods affirmatively.

But in the due course,Ash has become unpardonably late. The referee is just about to declare a walk-over victory of Tomo, our hero appears on the scene, just in the nick of time, letting his friends heave a huge sigh of relief, and the battle begins. Ash chooses Greninja, and Tomo sends out Altaria. The former absorbs a powerful Dragon Pulse from the latter, with little or no damage whatsoever.Ash and Greninja then combine and consummate their respective powers, and unfurl the Ash-Greninja form.Ash-Greninja adeptly evades a barrage of Draco Meteors from Altaria, and hits it successfully with a blitzkrieg of Water Shurikens, ultimately overpowering it. As the sunset calls it a day,the preliminary rounds are over, and it is revealed that Ash,Tierno and Sawyer-all have made it through the 1st round. The 2nd round matchups pit Sawyer against Tierno, and Ash against Astrid. Will Ash be able to counter the vast experiences of the weather-beaten trainers, with his youthful determination? Which strategy will prove supreme-brute force,or artful tactics? How far can the synchronized form of Ash-Greninja help him brave the decisive challenges?Only the next episode can probably answer...

Trivia

File:Title Card XY Ash V2.png
The title card segment focuses on Ash for this episode

Errors

  • In the long shot of the two Mega Charizard, the tips of Mega Charizard X's wings are blue instead of black.
  • During Ash's battle in the hallway, the grey color on Ash's left sneaker is larger than normal and the area at the front is red instead of white.
  • In the split second it is on screen before showing Alain as the winner, the scoreboard at the end of the battle incorrectly shows him having used Blastoise and Ludicolo (both of which display as having been knocked out).
  • Like in Rivals: Today and Tomorrow! and A Meeting of Two Journeys!, when Ash holds up Greninja's Poké Ball the white center and black band around the white button is much larger than normal.
  • In between the transformation of Ash-Greninja, Greninja is shown to have the pulse meter on its wrist which wasn't shown in between the battle earlier.
