White Smoke (Japanese: しろいけむり White Smoke) is an Ability introduced in Generation III. Two Pokémon can have this Ability, both of which are the only non-legendary Fire-type Pokémon without evolutionary relatives. Prior to Generation V, it was the signature Ability of Torkoal.

Effect

In battle

White Smoke prevents stat reduction. Therefore the Pokémon's stats cannot be reduced from moves such as Scary Face nor the Abilities like Intimidate. However, White Smoke does not prevent self-inflicted stat reduction from moves like Overheat. It also does not prevent stat reduction from status ailments like paralysis or items like Full Incense. White Smoke does not prevent stat losses caused by Heart Swap, Guard Swap, Power Swap, Guard Split, Power Split, and Baton Pass.

This Ability is ignored by Pokémon with Mold Breaker, Teravolt, and Turboblaze.

Outside of battle

From Pokémon Emerald onwards, if a Pokémon with White Smoke is leading the party, then White Smoke decreases the wild Pokémon encounter rate by 50%.
