Weezing (Japanese: マタドガス Matadogas) is a Poison-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Koffing starting at level 35.

Biology

Physiology

Weezing mostly look like two Koffing stuck together, albeit both being a lighter shade of purple than an actual Koffing, with one being larger than the other is. The larger head sports the skull-and-crossbones design featured on its pre-evolution, while the smaller head only has a light yellow circle underneath the face. It also has a third chamber on its underside, presumably for storing extra toxins, which resembles a tiny version of a Weezing head, minus the face and skull-and-crossbones pattern. Two small appendages connect this extra chamber to the heads. The larger head has prominent eyebrows, pointed teeth protruding from its lower jaw, and flatter teeth on its upper jaw, while the smaller head simply has two pointed teeth, one at each corner of the mouth. Triplet Weezing have been discovered, although they are extremely rare.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Each head contains a different toxin. When one head inflates, the other deflates, mixing the gases. By doing this multiple times, it becomes more toxic and noxious, although it does have the side effect of making Weezing smell worse. Weezing is capable of expelling this gas in order to attack its enemies, and can also attack with globs of sludge. Ironically, exquisite perfumes can be extracted from Weezing's toxic secretions. A Weezing is capable of generating electricity, as well as breathing fire. It is also capable of exploding. In rare cases, a Weezing can also exhibit signs of limited psychic power. Like it pre-evolution, Weezing's gas contains flammable hydrocarbons, which makes it volatile and easily ignited by fire or electricity. As a fully evolved Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior

A Weezing will find a dirty, unkempt house and nest there. At night, when the people in the house are asleep, Weezing will go through the trash. It constantly inflates and deflates its heads to mix its poison gases.

It has been explicitly stated that Koffing, Weezing's pre-evolution, is able to hover in midair due to its gases being lighter than air. Although the same has never been explicitly stated for Weezing, it can be assumed that this is the case, as Weezing displays an ability to float in midair seemingly identical to Koffing's ability. It is, however, a known fact that a Weezing's gases are less dense than water, enabling it to float on the surface of water effortlessly, although this also means that Weezing is essentially unable to spend any amount of time underwater.

Habitat

Weezing live in urban and suburban areas, and can often be found in dirty, unkempt houses. Active volcanoes are also a good place to find them. Their native range includes Kanto, Johto, and Sinnoh's Battle Zone.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Weezing feed on the dust, microorganisms, and especially gases emitted by garbage and toxic waste. Weezing consider gases that emanate from garbage to be the ultimate feast.

In the anime

Weezing in the anime

Major appearances

James's Weezing

James's Koffing evolved into Weezing during Dig Those Diglett!. In A Poached Ego, it left them with Jessie's Arbok to protect a group of Koffing and Ekans that were freed from the captivity of Pokémon poacher Rico.

Other

Ash used a Weezing in a Pokémon League entrance exam in The Ultimate Test. It defeated the instructor's Flareon with its Smog, SmokeScreen, and Tackle attacks. Later on, Ash commanded it to use Explosion against Team Rocket, causing them to blast off.

Minor appearances

A Weezing made a cameo during the "World of Pokémon" opening narration of the fourth, fifth and seventh movies.

In the manga

In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

James's Weezing makes an appearance in the manga The Electric Tale of Pikachu. It first appears as a Koffing in Pikachu's Excellent Adventure. All of its subsequent appearances, beginning in You Gotta Have Friends, are as a Weezing.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Both Koga and his daughter, Janine, have Weezing as a part of their arsenals. Besides these, many Weezing have been shown in the wild, most notably in the Rocket-altered ecosystem of Viridian Forest, or sometimes simply under Rocket command.

In the Pokémon Zensho manga

Koga's only known Pokémon is Weezing. It battled against Satoshi's Ditto and lost.

In the TCG

Main article: Weezing (TCG)

In the TFG

One Weezing figure has been released.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Weezing will hover in place and emit Poison Gas that juggles any opponent who comes near it, essentially serving the function of its pre-evolution, Koffing, from Super Smash Bros.

Weezing is also a float in the Poké Float stage. It appears as Chikorita leaves. Once Slowpoke appears, it will slowly deflate and move to the top of the screen.

Trophy information

The evolved form of Koffing, Weezing is basically a pair of Koffing fused together. They tend to float in the air and emit gas or noxious smoke from the outgrowths that cover their bodies. As strange as it may seem, diluting Weezing emissions as much as possible creates one of the most exquisite perfumes known to man.

Pokédex entries

This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation I.
Generation I
Red Where two kinds of poison gases meet, two Koffings can fuse into a Weezing over many years.
Blue
Yellow It lives and grows by absorbing dust, germs, and poison gases that are contained in toxic waste and garbage.
Stadium A twinned Koffing that forms on rare occasions where poisonous gases pool. Its two toxic gases appear to be different.
Generation II
Gold If one of the twin Koffing inflates, the other one deflates. It constantly mixes its poisonous gases.
Silver Top-grade perfume is made using its internal poison gases by diluting them to the highest level.
Crystal When it inhales poisonous gases from garbage, its body expands, and its insides smell much worse.
Stadium 2 If one of the twin Koffing inflates, the other one deflates. It constantly mixes its poisonous gases.
Generation III
Ruby Weezing loves the gases given off by rotted kitchen garbage. This Pokémon will find a dirty, unkept house and make it its home. At night, when the people in the house are asleep, it will go through the trash.
Sapphire Weezing alternately shrinks and inflates its twin bodies to mix together toxic gases inside. The more the gases are mixed, the more powerful the toxins become. The Pokémon also becomes more putrid.
Emerald By diluting its toxic gases with a special process, the highest grade of perfume can be extracted. To Weezing, gases emanating from garbage are the ultimate feast.
FireRed Very rarely, a sudden mutation can result in two small Koffing twins becoming conjoined as a Weezing.
LeafGreen Where two kinds of poison gases meet, two Koffings can fuse into a Weezing over many years.
Generation IV
Diamond It grows by feeding on gases released by garbage. Though very rare, triplets have been found.

Trivia

  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Weezing was originally known as "La", representing Los Angeles's polluted air.
  • Weezing and Koffing are the only pure Poison-type Pokémon immune to Ground-type attacks, due to their in-game Ability, Levitate.
  • Weezing has the highest Defense base stat out of all Poison-type Pokémon.
  • In certain instances in the games, such as summary pages and Pokémon Contests, a Pokémon's sprite will be horizontally flipped, unless its body is asymmetrical. For some reason, Weezing's sprite will get flipped in all instances despite its asymmetrical body. However, it may be explained by the twin bodies alternately inflating and deflating, as mentioned in the Pokédex, although this wouldn't necessarily explain why the body patterns switch places.
  • In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Pokédex entries for Weezing state that triplet forms have been discovered; however, this variant has not been shown in any Pokémon media.
  • Weezing shares similar traits to Muk and Garbodor. All three Pokémon are pure Poison types with a single pre-evolution, roughly the same base stat totals and evolution levels, and appear to be based of a certain pollution; Weezing being air pollution.

Origin

Considering its looks, its ability to float, and its tendency to explode, it may have been based upon a floating naval mine or living meteorite. It is also based on smog and other forms of air pollution. Weezing may also be based on the imagined fear that heavy pollution, caused by the leakage and/or improper disposal of toxic/radioactive waste, may result in the creation of new and undesirable life.

Name origin

Weezing is a corruption of wheezing, which means "producing a whistling sound while breathing with difficulty".

Matadogas may come from 又 mata (again), 獰 (bad) or 毒 doku (poisonous), and gas. Essentially, it is a doubling of Koffing's Japanese name Dogars, and thus a doubling of Koffing–which is exactly what Weezing is. It may also be a corruption of マスタードガス masutādogasu (mustard gas).
