Wailord (Japanese: ホエルオー Whaloh) is a Water-type Pokémon.

At 47 feet, 7 inches, (14.5 meters) Wailord is the largest Pokémon known to man.

Biology

Physiology

Wailord are cetacean Pokémon that are well known as the largest Pokémon discovered so far. It has small beady eyes and a huge mouth and a throat that is lined with grooves. It has two pairs of fins along its side and a horizontal tail at the back. It's vaguely shaped like a torpedo or a blimp.

Despite its enormous size, it is able to breed with many land-based Pokémon that are much smaller. This is due to it being in the Ground Egg Group, a reference to how whales are classified as mammals.

In the anime

Wailord first appeared in Having a Wailord of a Time. The Float Whale Pokémon was stuck on a beach near a Pokémon Center. Team Rocket tried to haul it away, but a Combusken foiled their plans.

A Wailmer that befriended a man named Robin evolved into a Wailord in Island Time. This Wailord transported Ash and friends across the ocean until they came across a ship heading for Ever Grande City.

Along with their pre-evolved form, Wailord appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.

In the manga

At sea, Sapphire from the Hoenn series travels on a Wailord named Wailulu.

Ruby Wailord is the largest of all identified Pokémon up to now. This giant Pokémon swims languorously in the vast open sea, eating massive amounts of food at once with its enormous mouth.
Sapphire When chasing prey, Wailord herds them by leaping out of the water and making a humongous splash. It is breathtaking to see this Pokémon leaping out of the sea with others in its pod.
Emerald It breathes through nostrils that it raises above the sea. By inhaling to its maximum capacity, a Wailord can dive close to 10,000 feet beneath the waves.
FireRed It is among the largest of all Pokémon. It herds prey in a pack then swallows the massed prey in one gulp.
LeafGreen It is among the largest of all Pokémon. It herds prey in a pack then swallows the massed prey in one gulp.

Trivia

  • Wailord is the tallest, and overall largest, Pokémon in existence.
  • A Wailord, along with a Relicanth, is necessary in the party in order to unleash the three legendary golems from their sleeping places within the Sealed Chamber in the Generation III games.
  • Wailord is well known for the HSOWA joke.
  • On Friday, August 24th, 2007, a GameFAQ's user named OdogforMVP created a (hacked) Wailord named 'FAILBOAT' and distributed them to every 20th poster in a Pre-Giveaway as well as a giveaway. It had SmokeScreen, Signal Beam, Surf, and Head Smash as its special moves.
  • Wailord has the fourth highest base HP stat of all Pokémon, after Blissey, Chansey, and Wobbuffet, in that order.

Origin

This Pokémon is based on the blue whale, the world's biggest mammal.

Name origin

Wailord's name is a combination of whale and lord. The wail may also refer to the sound that whales and this Pokémon may make.

Its Japanese name is probably a combination of whale and 王 ō, king.
