A volcano is a mountain with an opening in which lava, ash, and gas can escape. Volcanoes are often home to Fire-type and Ground-type Pokémon. In particular, several are home to Fire-type or Ground-type Legendary Pokémon, such as Moltres, Groudon, or Heatran.

In battle

In Generation VI and Generation VII, volcanic terrain gives Secret Power a 30% chance of inflicting a burn on the target, and gives Secret Power the appearance of Incinerate.

In the core series

Kanto

• Cinnabar Island - A dormant volcano with a town located at its foot which erupts between Generations I and II, causing the town to get swept away. A new Pokémon Center was eventually built near the eruption site, and the Cinnabar Gym was relocated to the Seafoam Islands. The Cinnabar Gym awards the Volcano Badge.

Sevii Islands

• Mt. Ember - A volcano located on One Island. It is supposed to be dormant, though it is often reported that the peak blazes with fire at night, likely caused by Moltres, which roosts on its summit.

Hoenn

• Mt. Chimney - A towering volcanic mountain reaching a height of nearly 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). The view from the peak is said to be beyond compare. The volcano accumulates a vast cloud of soot above it which rains ash down upon Route 113 to the north, leaving the grass and trees in the area layered in residue. A villainous team once attempted to alter the state of the volcano. Notably, Groudon sometimes resides here.
• Sootopolis City - In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Sootopolis City is formed in the crater of a volcano. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it is instead formed from the impact of a meteoroid strike.

Sinnoh

• Stark Mountain - A rugged, seemingly indestructible rock mountain that is thickly blanketed by the volcanic ash it spews. Inside the mountain, fissures in spilled and hardened lava form enormous caverns. It is home to Heatran, which resides in the innermost chamber.

Unova

• Reversal Mountain - A mountain where Heatran used to come to cool off. In Pokémon Black 2, it is a volcano that has grabbed many headlines for its series of recent eruptions. The mountain's interior is filled with water. In Pokémon White 2, it is a volcano recorded to have had a huge eruption long ago. The interior is filled with magma.

Kalos

• Mt. Molteau - An anime-exclusive mountain that is an active volcano. Moltres sometimes flies around here.

Alola

The Alola region was formed from volcanic eruptions in the distant past. Specific examples of Alolan volcanoes include:

• Ten Carat Hill - An open crater surrounded by a cave system, created by an underwater volcano.
• Wela Volcano Park - A mountain with steep paths and waste lands, with a trial site located on top.
• Blush Mountain - A mountain home to Fire-type and Electric-type Pokémon. The Geothermal Power Plant on the mountainside uses the volcano's heat to produce steam and turn turbines, which generates electricity.

Hisui

• Firespit Island - A tall, skinny volcano sits at the center of the island, the interior of which is hollow and comprises the Lava Dome Sanctum, home to Heatran. Pools of impassable lava puddles simmer around the base of the volcano and within the Molten Arena, the place where the noble Arcanine resides.

Kitakami

• Oni Mountain - A large mountain at the center of Kitakami, from which volcanic gas leaks out of the ground.

Pokémon Island

• Pokémon Island Volcano - An active volcano teeming with Fire-type Pokémon and boiling magma that generates sweltering heat. At the beginning of the course is a volcanic splatter cone surrounded by a lava pit. If a Pester Ball is thrown into its crater, it will emit a thick cloud of purple smoke resembling a Koffing. An enormous egg will hatch into Moltres if knocked into the lava.

Orre

• Mt. Battle - An active volcano with a series of metal platforms built throughout that hosts a challenge for training Pokémon.
• Citadark Isle - A volcanic island ringed by magma and surrounded by strong artificially generated currents.

  • Dark Crater - A dungeon in the Volcanic Area that is home to many Fire-type Pokémon. Entei may appear here.
  • Fire Island Volcano - Entei resides at the summit of this volcanic dungeon.
  • Giant Volcano - Heatran guards the Fiery Drum at the peak of the volcano. Moltres may also appear here.
  • Inferno Cave - A dungeon in the Volcanic Area. Entei may appear here.
  • Mt. Blaze - A volcanic mountain dungeon that is home to Moltres.
• Friend Areas - Three Friend Areas are located in the Volcano area in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team.
  • Scorched Plains - The tremendously hot ground of this grassy field of fire spouts flames. It is a treasure trove of Fire-type Pokémon.
  • Crater - The sight of this crater spouting spectacular plumes of lava greatly satisfies fire-loving Pokémon.
  • Volcanic Pit - It is said that in the bowels of the Earth, where magma cascades in fiery streams, lives a Pokémon from mythical times. Groudon is the only Pokémon that will reside here.

Pokétopia

• Magma Colosseum - A Colosseum built on top of an active volcano on Pokétopia's northeast island. The arena in the Colosseum is surrounded by lava.

Oblivia

• Faldera Volcano - A volcanic island with flowing magma. Its ground is made of cooled magma, and many of the Pokémon there are heat tolerant. It is home to Moltres.

Ransei

• Ignis - A kingdom in the southwest of the region that has a volcano on its battlefield.

Carmonte Island

• The Volcano - A hotel built around a volcano.

Kingdom of toys

• Ruby Volcano - An area with a smoldering caldera where Groudon resides.

Ferrum

• Phos Volcano - An arena in the cavern of a volcano, surrounded by lava, a mine, and the ruins of an ancient civilization. Pokémon such as Slugma, Magcargo, Sableye, Carbink, and Archeops appear in the background here. Another volcano is visible in the distance as well.

Lental

• Fireflow Volcano - The region's largest volcano, which boasts not one but two craters. One of the region's calderas is uniquely filled with blue lava. Pokémon have thrived in this fiery volcanic region since prehistoric times; it is home to many wild Fossil Pokémon. Additionally, Ho-Oh and Volcarona have been sighted here.

Other

• P Volcano - A fiery and rocky course in Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure, featuring an erupting volcano and many Fire-type Pokémon. Along the path are several vents of smoke and bridges across rivers of fire.
• In the e-Reader game Mighty Tyranitar, a volcano is seen spewing rocks at the Tyranitar controlled by the player.

Pokéwalker areas

• Volcano Path - A path through a currently active volcano. Very fiery and rare Pokémon live here.

List of Pokémon associated with volcanoes

Several Pokémon are closely associated with volcanoes, often incorporating volcanoes into their appearance and biology, and often capable of learning volcanic moves such as Eruption and Lava Plume, or are rare Pokémon that are mainly found at volcanoes.

Pokémon	Description
Magby Magmar Magmortar	Magby, Magmar, and Magmortar can all be found in volcanic craters and can learn Lava Plume. It is said when many Magby appear, it heralds a volcanic eruption, and many of these Pokémon can be seen in areas with volcanic activity. Magmar was born in the spout of an active volcano; Magmar typically live near volcanoes, and can often be found near the mouths of volcanoes. When it's tired, it leaps into the mouth of a volcano and soaks its body in magma to ease its weariness. Living in the crater of a volcano has caused Magmortar's body to resemble its environment — it has an organ similar to a magma chamber. It's said that only a single pair of Magmortar will inhabit any given volcano.
Moltres	If Moltres is injured, it is said to dip its body in the molten magma of a volcano to burn and heal itself. This Legendary Pokémon has been sighted at several notable volcanoes around the Pokémon world.
Cyndaquil Quilava Typhlosion	Cyndaquil, Quilava, and Typhlosion can all learn Smokescreen and Eruption, which may allude to volcanic ash and the eruptions of volcanoes. Cyndaquil may be based on the Chinese mythological creature called Hinezumi, the same as Cyndaquil's species name in Japanese, which is a fire mouse that lives in volcanoes. Quilava and Typhlosion are known as the Volcano Pokémon, and slightly resemble volcanoes in shape when standing up, with fire 'erupting' from their head or neck.
Slugma Magcargo	Slugma and Magcargo can both learn Lava Plume, and Magcargo has a volcanic shell, its body resembling lava and the rocky shell glowing hot and spewing flames. Slugma are a common sight in volcanic areas. It's said that in ancient times, when volcanoes were more active, there were many more Slugma than there are now. Tens of thousands of years spent living in volcanic craters have turned Magcargo's bodies into magma. According to folklore, a sudden increase in the wild Magcargo population heralds a volcanic eruption.
Entei Gouging Fire	Entei is known as the Volcano Pokémon and can learn both Eruption and Lava Plume. It is said that volcanoes erupt somewhere when Entei barks or roars. Entei is thought to have been born in the eruption of a volcano, and it is said that one is born every time a new volcano appears. This brawny Pokémon courses around the earth, spouting flames hotter than a volcano's magma. Gouging Fire, a Paradox Pokémon related to Entei, may share its volcanic associations. It is also capable of learning Lava Plume.
Numel Camerupt	Numel and Camerupt can both learn Lava Plume, while Camerupt can also learn Eruption. Numel has a hump with the appearance of a dormant volcano with grass growing over it, while Camerupt has two active volcanoes on its back. Mega Camerupt has a singular hump that appears to be an erupting volcano. Camerupt has a volcano inside its body; the volcanoes on Camerupt's back have a major eruption every 10 years — or whenever it becomes really angry. It is a Pokémon that lives in the crater of a volcano.
Torkoal	Torkoal has a volcanic appearance, is often found in volcanic areas, and can learn both Eruption and Lava Plume.
Groudon	Groudon can learn both Eruption and Lava Plume. It sleeps in magma underground and is said to make volcanoes erupt on awakening. Groudon may be modeled after the Earth's land and volcanoes.
Heatran	Heatran is known as the Lava Dome Pokémon; lava domes are large mounds created from volcanic lava. Heatran can also learn Lava Plume. It dwells in volcanic caves and has been found in several volcanoes throughout the Pokémon world.

There are also various Pokémon that have behavior that is affected by or related in some way to volcanoes.

• Many Fire-type and Ground-type Pokémon live in or around volcanoes.
• When Sandshrew's skin gets wrinkled from moisture, it heads for a volcano. It lies flat on a spot with a lot of geothermal heat and dries itself out.
• It's said that after fleeing a volcanic eruption, Alolan Sandslash settled on a snowy mountain.
• Although Alolan Diglett is powerful enough to dig right through volcanic rock, it doesn't allow itself to be seen very often. The need to dig through volcanic rock in the ground has made them more powerful than the Diglett of other regions.
  • Alolan Diglett and Alolan Dugtrio's hair may be based on Pele's hair, a thin volcanic glass formed near Hawaiian volcanoes. The darker soil surrounding its body may be a reference to black sand, which is found on beaches near volcanoes.
• Professor Laventon believed that the igneous rock components in the fur of Hisuian Growlithe are the result of volcanic activity in its habitat. This likely carries over to its Evolution, Hisuian Arcanine.
• According to its Photodex entry, Graveler is "such a resilient Pokémon, it can even withstand the heat of the volcano’s lava."
• Golem is said to live in volcanic craters on mountain peaks.
• Garchomp makes its home in volcanic mountains.
• Rhyperior's sturdy carapace protects it from volcanic eruptions.
• Pansear lives in caves in volcanoes.
  • Pansear, Simisear, and Simipour all have design elements that may evoke volcanoes.
• When volcanic ash darkened the atmosphere, it is said that Volcarona's fire provided a replacement for the sun.
• Eating sulfur in its volcanic habitat is what causes explosive compounds to develop in Turtonator's shell.
• Parts of Kleavor's body turned to stone when it evolved thanks to an extremely rare ore found in volcanic areas.

Additionally, some Pokémon have names that are partially derived from volcano or volcanic.

• Despite Volcarona's name, it is more often associated with the sun.
• Despite Volcanion's name, it is more likely inspired by steam engines and other boilers.

Trivia

• According to Gigantamax Venusaur's Pokédex entry in Pokémon Sword, "Huge amounts of pollen burst from it with the force of a volcanic eruption. Breathing in too much of the pollen can cause fainting."
