Viridian City (Japanese: トキワシティ Tokiwa City) is a small city located in western Kanto. In the Generation I and Generation III games, Team Rocket leader Giovanni serves as Leader of the Ground-specialist Viridian Gym, but the Gym is locked until the player can gain all seven other League Badges. Blue becomes the Gym Leader in the Generation II games and trains a variety of Pokémon.

Three paths, all major, lead from the city center. To the north is Route 2, as well as Viridian Forest, which lies in the middle of Route 2 south of Pewter City. To the south is Route 1, which leads to Pallet Town. To the west is Route 22, leading to the Indigo Plateau and the Pokémon League.

Pokémon Academy

A Pokémon academy is a school where students and Trainers can learn more about Pokémon.Most beginning trainers visit at least one of them, and common trainers who study extensively at these locations are Lasses, School Kids, and Scientists. Much like the Pokémon Academy in Violet City, this building, located in the center of Viridian in Generation III only, is dedicated to teaching the basics of Pokémon to inexperienced trainers. Many trainers that pass through Viridian fall under this category, making the city an ideal location. In Generation II this school was rebuilt and tuned into the Trainer House.

Trainer House

Main article: Trainer House

A unique attraction in Generation II-era Viridian is the Trainer House, a location where trainers from far and wide can battle one trainer per day. On entry, the first floor has a few people and a small desk. Speaking to the woman behind the desk enables entry into the lower basement, where a lone trainer can be found. This trainer will either be Cal, if the player has never used Mystery Gift with anyone, or the last player he or she has used Mystery Gift with. If it is Cal, his team will consist of the final forms of all three Johto starter Pokémon at level 50, namely Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr. If it is another player that has been Mystery Gifted with, their team will consist of whatever Pokémon were in their party at the time of Mystery Gifting, including held items, moves, levels, and so on. No matter what, however, the opponent trainer's sprite will be of Gold.

Viridian Gym

The Viridian Gym is the official gym of Viridian City. It is based on Template:Type2 Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Giovanni, the head of Team Rocket. Trainers who defeat him receive the Earth Badge. Viridian Gym appears in all games set in the Kanto region. In Generation I and III when the player makes their first encounter with the gym, it is locked because of the absence of the Gym Leader. With this acknowledged, the player journeys off onto other Gyms to challenge them. Once this has been accomplished and when the player has collected the remaining seven Gym Badges, the Viridian Gym reopens.

Inside the Gym, the floor uses the same transporting tiles as in the Rocket Hideout. The player must use these tiles to navigate through the Gym to reach Giovanni. In Generation II, when Blue takes the place of the Gym Leader, the Gym is completely remodeled, and the tiles are now gone. The Gym has no junior trainers and large blocks that resemble Lego bricks form most of its design. After Giovanni is defeated, he will give the player the Earth Badge.

In the anime

Viridian City is first visited in Pokémon Emergency!, when Ash Ketchum takes his sick Pikachu to the Pokémon Center. They head to the Viridian City Pokémon Center to be healed. When entering the town, Ash is stopped by Officer Jenny, who finds him suspicious, due to the fact he is carrying Pikachu in his arms and not a Poké Ball, but Ash confirms his identity with his Pokédex, Jenny then rushes Ash to the Pokémon Center. As Pikachu is treated, Ash feels crestfallen and calls home. His mother tries to encourage him, but he still feels downtrodden. He is then called by Professor Oak who is surprised that he reached Viridian so soon. Ash then tells him about the Ho-Oh he saw earlier. Oak feels that he is lying because many trainers have never seen that Pokémon even after searching for it during their whole life. Meanwhile, two 'wanted' posters are revealed, showing the pictures of two 'Most Wanted criminals', Jessie and James of Team Rocket. The two trouble makers spot the posters and swear vengeance on Viridian for putting up wanted posters of them. Their ally Meowth is then revealed to be their Pokémon.

While Pikachu is being treated, Team Rocket attack the Pokémon Center with the intent of stealing the Pokémon inside. The Center's Nurse Joy tries to transfer all Pokémon to the safety of the Pewter City Pokémon Center, because it is an emergency. Team Rocket use their Ekans and Koffing to wreck havoc in the Center. However, just then Pikachu somehow manages to revive itself and along with the other Pikachu from the Center's back-up power generator, ThunderShock Team Rocket away.

Officer Jenny arrives too late as Team Rocket manages to escape in their Meowth shaped balloon. They agree that Pikachu would make a great gift for their boss and decide to steal it when the chance comes.

Ash leaves Viridian City and heads for the Viridian Forest with a revived relation with Pikachu and Misty in tow.

In the Pokémon Special manga

Viridian Ciy is first visited in the Bulbasaur, Come Home! round of the Red, Green & Blue chapter when Red and Professor Oak chase the Pokémon that escaped of his laboratory. They enter the abandoned Viridian City Gym and fight with the only resident of that building, an angry Machoke.

Differences in Generations

This is no notable differences of the city between Generation I and Generation III games. The only chance is that the house have begin slightly bigger, along with a small repositioning of a fews building. The differences between Generation I and Generation II games are more noticeable. The Pokémon Academy has been replaceed with the giant Trainer House. Along with the addition of a couple of buildings that weren't there before.
