Verdanturf Town in Ruby and Sapphire, with the Contest House

Verdanturf Town (Japanese: シダケタウン Shidake Town) is a small, quaint town nestled between the mountains and the plains in central western Hoenn.

Wally is sent to live here with his aunt, uncle, and cousin Wanda in order to improve his health. This town is well known for its very clean air. The town features a Contest Hall in Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. However, the Contest Hall is replaced with a Battle Tent in Pokémon Emerald.

There are two ways out of Verdanturf. To the east is Route 117 towards Mauville City. To the north is the Rusturf Tunnel, which was being constructed to link Rustboro City and Verdanturf. However, the construction disturbed the local Whismur who lived in the tunnel, and so it was canceled. Wanda's boyfriend tried to dig the tunnel himself, but was unable to do it. After the player character of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire gets the Dynamo Badge, he or she can use Rock Smash to complete the tunnel and open a path to Route 116.

Places of interest

Friendship rater

In the town, there is a woman who rates the friendship of Pokémon. She is located in the house situated to the left of Wanda's house.

Wanda's house

Wanda and most of her family live in the south side of the town.

In the games, Wally is sent to Verdanturf Town to live with his cousin, Wanda, and his aunt and uncle.

Shroomish girl

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there is a little girl between the houses of Wanda and the friendship rater who has lost her Shroomosh. She mentions it went missing somewhere near the sign. If the player reads the sign after talking to the girl, the Shroomish will come out from behind the sign and return to the girl. As a reward for finding it, the little girl will give the player the Intriguing Stone.

Contest Hall

Pokémon Coordinators flock to the town for Pokémon Contests. All Contest challenges originate in Verdanturf, as it is where the Normal Rank Pokémon Contests, essential for moving on, are located, and where Pokémon Coordinators can register their Contest Passes. In Emerald, however, the Contest Hall is replaced with a Battle Tent. Contest entries of all ranks are unrestricted in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

In the anime

Verdanturf Contest Hall in the anime

Ash, Max, May and Brock arrived in Verdanturf Town on their way to Petalburg City. May competed in the Verdanturf Pokémon Contest in Disaster of Disguise and Disguise Da Limit! and met up and competed with a mysterious Coordinator called "The Phantom". In the anime, Verdanturf has shown to have a fairly luxurious neighborhood, and appears much larger than it does in the games.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Ruby, having arrived from the Weather Institute to Verdanturf with Gabby and Ty, starts his Pokémon Contest conquest in Volume 18. It was then revealed, at the end of the Ruby & Sapphire arc, that the Contest Hall was severely damaged following the incident involving Kyogre and Groudon, and a Battle Tent was set up in its place.

Wally, who had been in Verdanturf with his cousin Wanda to improve his health, left the town before Ruby arrived.

Trivia

  • The Poké Mart of this town is the only one in Hoenn where Nest Balls can be purchased.
  • Verdanturf's Japanese motto is くさの においの かぜふく こうげん "The highlands where the grass-scented wind blows".
