A Grunt (Japanese: したっぱ Underling) of a villainous team is a low-ranking member thereof. These Trainers typically use similar Pokémon, and serve as the first line of defense for the various evil teams during their plots.

In the games

Grunts are typically the first members of an evil team encountered in the games, and are always the first members battled. Unlike most Trainer classes, Grunts do not have individual names after Generation I: their programmed Trainer class is rather their team name, while their given name is "Grunt".

...and so on...

In the anime

In the anime, grunts typically have little to no role, serving as generic members of their teams and having little interaction with the anime's main characters.
