At the start of most episode in the original series the familiar tune can be heard which also features in the games.Which Ash himself has admitted to hearing it also , breaking the third wall.
A good example is in the anime when Ash flee's from a flock of attacking wild Spearow during the first anime I choose you Pickachu} .The music playing sets scene for the more serious side of the anime, adding emotion.
