Umbreon (Japanese: ブラッキー Blacky) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Eevee when leveled up with high happiness during the night or when around a Moon Shard.

It is the Starter Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum alongside the other Generation II Eeveelution, Espeon.

Biology

Physiology

Umbreon is the Pokémon that Eevee evolves into when it has gained a complete trust of its trainer at night or when around a Moon Shard. It has a sleek black body with a pair of crimson cat or fox-like eyes and yellow bands on its long, pointed ears and bushy, foxlike tail. Umbreon's forehead and legs have yellow rings on them. Its rings are said to glow at night.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Umbreon can spray a poisonous sweat whenever it gets agitated. As a Template:Type2 Pokémon, Umbreon can learn several moves with various disruptive effects, such as Taunt or Thief. Despite its appearance, Umbreon is a Pokémon of strong endurance as it has high defensive stats. Since Umbreon is a fully evolved Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior

Umbreon stalks prey silently at night. As it awaits its victims' approach, the yellow rings on its body begin to glow. During the day, they blink on and off. They are often seen on roofs and in trees staring at the moon.

Habitat

Umbreon are normally found in dark areas such as thick forests, but are most commonly found under the care of people.

Diet

Other

Umbreon also appeared in Trouble's Brewing and Espeon, Not Included under the ownership of one of the Kimono Sisters.

Dawn's mother, Johanna, owns an Umbreon, which appeared in Strategy Begins at Home!.

Minor appearances

Umbreon made a small cameo in the beginning of Giratina and the Sky Warrior together with an Eevee and the other six Eeveelutions.

In The Battle Club and Tepig's Choice!, Umbreon is mentioned in Ash's Pokédex after mistaking a blackened-up Tepig for it on a monitor that broke out of the warehouse.

Pokédex entries

Episode Pokémon Source Entry
EP171 Umbreon Ash's Pokédex Umbreon, the Moonlight Pokémon. When an Eevee has had sufficient training and is exposed to moonlight, it evolves into an Umbreon.
This concludes the entries from the original series.
Episode Pokémon Source Entry
BW004 Umbreon Ash's Pokédex Umbreon, the Moonlight Pokémon, and an evolved form of Eevee. The rings of Umbreon's body glow faintly when exposed to the moon's aura, and it gains a mysterious power.
This concludes the entries from the Best Wishes series.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

In Volume 14, Karen is seen with an Umbreon as the cornerstone of her team, as in the games. It apparently evolved from the Eevee she has had since childhood.

Greta of the Battle Arena is seen using an Umbreon in her battles with Guile Hideout and Emerald, during which it easily defeats his Dusclops before falling to his Sudowoodo, which goes on to win the match, earning him the Guts Symbol.

Trivia

Origin

Umbreon's origins are uncertain, though it could be based on a black fox, a color variation of the red fox, or maybe a black cat. It also has traits of other animals, such as Bat-eared Foxes, Coyotes, jackals, and hares. It could equally be inspired by the Moon rabbit, Bastet, Anubis, or paraselene.

Name origin

Umbreon's name is derived from umbra, Latin for shadow and ghost, as well as the name for the moon's silhouette during a solar eclipse. The -eon suffix, common to all Eevee evolutions, comes from Eevee's prototype English name and possibly refers to the ending suffix of evolution itself. Umbreon's name may also be derived from the color umber, seeing that it is a shade of brown very close to black. Its Japanese name, Blacky, could be a mix of 黒 (black) and 運が良い (lucky), tributing the black cat in Japan that is considered lucky. It may also simply refer to the color of its coat.
