* While the Cosmog line and Necrozma are implied to have originated from Ultra Space, with the former even being speculated to be Ultra Beasts by the [[Aether Foundation]], none of them have the Beast Boost ability that the Ultra Beasts share. This may be due to the wormhole aura wearing off them.

Artwork depicting the Ultra Beasts

The Ultra Beasts (Japanese: ウルトラビースト Ultra Beast) are a group of extradimensional Pokémon originating from Ultra Space. They are believed to possess great power and pose a threat to humans and regular Pokémon, especially to those who have entered an Ultra Wormhole. This is because they mistake the energy remaining on these people as a possible route back to their own dimension, and become hostile upon discovering that it is not.

There are currently seven known Ultra Beasts:

All seven Ultra Beasts share the Ability Beast Boost. Wild Ultra Beasts receive a stat increase at the start of the battle like Totem Pokémon. All Poké Balls except the Master Ball and Beast Ball have a catch rate multiplier of 1× against Ultra Beasts; the Beast Ball has a catch rate multiplier of 5× for Ultra Beasts, whereas this multiplier is 0.1× for all other Pokémon. Ultra Beasts are part of the Undiscovered Egg Group (thus cannot be bred), are all genderless, and are guaranteed to have at least three IVs of 31.

Unlike regular Pokémon, the Pokédex will not register Ultra Beasts until they are captured. If the Ultra Beast is not in the Pokédex, its name will show as ??? in battle.

History

According to Alolan legend, the Ultra Beasts appeared from an Ultra Wormhole and fought the guardian deities in the past. Years prior to the events of Pokémon Sun and Moon, Professor Mohn discovered both Ultra Wormholes and the Ultra Beasts.

The Aether Foundation conducted research on the Ultra Beasts, including the development of a Pokémon, Type: Null, intended to kill them. They also developed the Beast Ball to catch the Ultra Beasts, as other Poké Balls cannot properly recognize the Ultra Beasts. They also hypothesized that Cosmog is an Ultra Beast from Ultra Space, due to its ability to create Ultra Wormholes.

The International Police has given each of the Ultra Beasts code names, and intends to destroy them to protect the Pokémon world. However, Anabel and Looker task the player with catching the Ultra Beasts to protect them instead. The International Police has found that the Ultra Beasts are surrounded by the same energy found in Totem Pokémon, an aura known as Beast Boost that comes from the Ultra Wormhole. Although Necrozma's Pokédex entry states that it is "reminiscent of the Ultra Beasts", the International Police have not identified it as one and Beast Balls do not have an increased chance of catching it.

In the games

Pokémon Sun and Moon

During the main story, the player encounters Nihilego at Aether Paradise during their first meeting with Aether President Lusamine, when it emerges from a spontaneously appearing Ultra Wormhole. During the player's confrontation with Lusamine after she captures Nebby, Lusamine uses Nebby's power to open Ultra Wormholes across the Alola region, bringing Ultra Beasts into the region; Nihilego is seen emerging from the portal near Lusamine, while BuzzwoleS/PheromosaM is seen emerging from a portal over Melemele Island and battling Tapu Koko.

After entering the Hall of Fame, the Ultra Beasts can be found across Alola. If a wild Ultra Beast is defeated in battle, it can still be encountered again in the same area and fought again. The player must catch all of the Ultra Beasts in an area in order to continue with the post-game plot and make the next species of Ultra Beast available. When an Ultra Beast is in the area, the music changes until they are all captured.

Trivia

  • The Ultra Beasts who share the same code number share at least one type, and do not share types with any of the other Ultra Beasts.
  • The base stats of the Ultra Beasts, and the levels at which they learn moves (except level 1) are all prime numbers. They share this trait with Cosmog, its evolutions, and Necrozma.
  • The Ultra Beasts share some characteristics with numerous Legendary Pokémon: they all have base stat totals of 570, are genderless and are scripted encounters with a low catch rate. However, official sources are unclear on whether to classify them as Legendary Pokémon.
