Ultima (Japanese:  キワメ Kiwame), known as Kimberly in Chuang Yi's translations, is an old woman who lives on Boon Island in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

Character

Ultima is known as the "guardian of ultimate attacks," and has been known to require Trainers to go through trials known as the Path of Skipping, Path of Catching, and Path of Battling in order for their Pokémon to learn these techniques. Through these trials, Red's Saur was able to learn Frenzy Plant and Blue's Charizard was able to learn Blast Burn. Ultima later taught Green's Blasty Hydro Cannon without having to go through the trials.

History

During the battle at Trainer Tower, Ultima stole a huge amount of items from Team Rocket, including an Old Sea Map that would have been used to locate Faraway Island, the home of Mew. She contacted Mr. Briney, an old friend of hers, but by sheer coincidence Briney informed her that he had found Faraway Island shortly before she called him, and that Mew was headed towards the Kanto region.

After the FireRed & LeafGreen arc, in which the five Pokédex holders were turned to stone, Ultima handed Professor Oak some data that she had taken from Team Rocket which held information on Jirachi, thereby beginning the plan to save the petrified Trainers in the Emerald arc. She took both Crystal and Gold under her tutelage to help teach Exbo to learn how to use Blast Burn after two months of training, and Megaree to learn how to use Frenzy Plant. She also handed Gold a Faraway Island soil sample Briney had given her, who in turn gave it to Emerald so he could stop Guile Hideout's mind-controlled rental Pokémon army.

Ultima made a cameo appearance in Epilogue, on a ship to the Battle Frontier.

Ultima appears in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc discussing with Steven about the symbols in the Granite Cave, agreeing to teach Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to use Mega Evolution in order to help them prevent an upcoming disaster threatening the Hoenn region.

		Typhlosion was first seen demonstrating the power of the Blaze Ability. Typhlosion's only known move is Flamethrower, and its Ability is Blaze.

		Meganium was first seen demonstrating the power of the Overgrow Ability. Meganium's only known move is Solar Beam, and its Ability is Overgrow.

		Dragonite
		Dragonite is Ultima's main mode of transportation, first seen when Red and Blue were battling on the Path of Battling and when Green's Ditty explained what happened to its Trainer. It appeared again in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc watching as Ultima trains Sapphire and Emerald to Mega Evolve their Pokémon. None of Dragonite's moves are known, and its Ability is Inner Focus.

		Feraligatr was first seen protecting Green when she was attacked by the residents of One Island. Feraligatr's only known move is Hydro Pump.

		Ultima had Red and Blue ride on two Dodrio for the Path of Catching trial. Outside the trials, it is not known if the Dodrio are on her official team. None of Dodrio's moves are known.

In the games

Ultima is based on the old woman living on Cape Brink in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, a Move Tutor known for teaching Frenzy Plant to Venusaur, Blast Burn to Charizard, or Hydro Cannon to Blastoise.

Trivia

• Due to Coronis's translation of the manga, she is also popularly known as Brinca in the fan community, as Coronis is fond of inventing Western names for manga-only characters who lack dub names.
• Ultima possesses a full set of the fully evolved forms of Johto's starter Pokémon, who themselves are able to obtain the "ultimate moves" either through evolving from Pokémon obtained on Mt. Battle in Pokémon XD or from a similar Move Tutor at a specific location in the post-Generation III games.
