Tyson first appeared in Like A Meowth to Flame! of the Ever Grande Conference arc. He rescued Ash and his friends from a flock of Murkrow with his Meowth. They became fast friends as it turns out they were going to the same place to eat. Tyson also has a certain fondness for food like May. The group meets up with him interacting with Mr. Goodshow, where he found out that Ash and Brock were also torch-runners in the past. Later, an "Officer Jenny" and "Nurse Joy" (Team Rocket in disguise) go up to Tyson and run off with the torch of Moltres. He warns Ash and the gang that they ran off with the torch and chase after them. Tyson stops their balloon by having his Metagross use Confusion. His Meowth successfully takes the torch from the talking one and finishes the villains with Thunderbolt.

In Saved By The Beldum!, he comes to Ash's and Morrison's rescue from Team Rocket's pit traps. Once again, his Meowth sends them away but this time, with an Iron Tail. In that same episode, he battles Vivica and her Persian. Tyson sends out Meowth and ends up winning the round, only for him to restrain Meowth from attacking any further.

In Shocks and Bonds, Tyson goes up against Johnny with Sceptile and Aggron remaining as Donphan and Blastoise were already knocked out by the time Ash and company arrived to watch his battle. Tyson was able to defeat Johnny when Sceptile successfully used SolarBeam on Aggron.

He is then watching the six-on-six battle between Ash and his opponent, Katie.

Tyson defeats his opponent's Rhydon with Meowth in A Judgement Brawl after Ash defeated Katie.

He battles Ash in Choose It or Lose It! and At The End of the Fray!. Tyson was a very tough foe for Ash as both sides were down to their last Pokémon, Pikachu and Meowth respectively. After a long battle, both sides were having trouble standing up. However, Meowth emerged victorious when it was the only one standing. Tyson congratulates Ash for a good battle. Tyson then went on to the finals and ends up winning the Hoenn League, having the chance to battle the Hoenn Elite Four.

Ash and the group wave goodbye to Tyson as he goes off on another journey, somewhere.

Tyson's Meowth
Main article: Tyson's Meowth

Meowth is one of Tyson's main Pokémon. It appeared for the first time in Like a Meowth to Flame!, where Tyson used it to save Ash and his friends from a flock of Murkrow. Tyson found Meowth in a weak condition after a battle, and decided to help it.

Tyson's Metagross
Tyson's Metagross debuted in Like a Meowth to Flame!, when its Trainer used it to recover the Moltres Flame from Team Rocket. It tried to use Confusion to stop the balloon in midair but was pushed to a stalemate when Meowth cranked up the flames. Metagross was successful, however, in lowering the balloon so that Ash could jump in, then catching Ash when he jumped to safety.

It was later seen training along with other of Tyson's Pokémon in Choose It or Lose It!.

Metagross finally battled against Ash's Pokémon in At the End of the Fray. Metagross used its Psychic attack to freeze Swellow in place, and when Swellow broke free, its powerful defense caused Swellow's all out attack to do more damage to itself. A Hyper Beam was enough to finish Swellow off. It then went up against Ash's Grovyle. Aiming for the tiny crack in Metagross' armour caused by Swellow, Grovyle launched a barrage of Bullet Seeds, whilst using its speed to dodge even Metagross's Hyper Beam. Grovyle charged in for a Leaf Blade, striking the crack and damaging Metagross, but this attack left it exposed to be flattened by a Meteor Mash. Ash's final Pokémon, Pikachu, was unable to damage Metagross through its powerful armor with Thunderbolt, but managed to dodge the psychic powers of Metagross to use Iron Tail. Then, Pikachu unleashed Thunder on the exposed space, defeating Metagross after a hard battle.

Metagross's known moves are Confusion, Psychic, Hyper Beam, and Meteor Mash.

Tyson's Sceptile
Tyson's Sceptile was first seen in Shocks and Bonds where it was battling Johnny's Aggron and Blastoise along with Donphan. By the time Ash arrived, Donphan and Blastoise had been defeated and Sceptile was in battle with Aggron one-on-one. Tyson and Sceptile proved to be a very tactical combination, and won by detecting Aggron's Metal Claw before each one struck and sidestepping them. Once Aggron used Harden, Sceptile charged up a SolarBeam and flattened Aggron in one hit.

In Choose It or Lose It!, Sceptile was easily defeating a Rhydon and advancing Tyson into the top eight. It was then seen training for the battle against Ash, before being Tyson's opening Pokémon against Ash's Glalie. Sceptile launched the SolarBeam which had served it so well in the past, which clashed with Glalie's Ice Beam and caused a devastating explosion. In the next episode, it was revealed that the explosion had knocked out both Sceptile and Glalie.

Sceptile's known moves are Detect, Bullet Seed, and SolarBeam.

Tyson's Donphan
Tyson's Donphan was first seen on the scoreboard having been defeated in the Double Battle against Johnny, his Aggron and his Blastoise. However, Blastoise had also been defeated and Sceptile managed to recover the battle and progress to the next round. It was later seen training along with other of Tyson's Pokémon in Choose It or Lose It!.

In the next episode, Donphan battled Ash's Swellow. Not hesitating, Donphan fills the arena with a Sandstorm, forcing Swellow to clear the air. Once it had, Donphan used Rollout to inflict heavy damage on Swellow, propelling itself of a nearby boulder for increased velocity. Donphan kept up a barrage of attacks, inflicting more and more damage on Swellow, but just as it was about to finish it off, Swellow caught Donphan with its feet, keeping it at a distance. It then flew up and slammed Donphan on its back, knocking it out.

Donphan's known moves are Sandstorm and Rollout.

Debut Shocks and Bonds
Tyson's Shiftry
Tyson's Shiftry debuted in Choose It or Lose It!, where it was training for next day's battle.

In At the End of the Fray, Shiftry went up against Ash Ketchum's Torkoal. Shiftry showed its speed by evading multiple Flamethrowers, and struck Torkoal with a powerful Mega Kick. However, Torkoal recovered and launched a continuous Flamethrower, leaping into the air to maintain the flames. Shiftry was unable to dodge this and was knocked out by the super-effective attack.

Shiftry's known moves are Mega Kick and Shadow Ball.

Tyson's Hariyama
Tyson's Hariyama debuted in Choose It or Lose It!, where it was training for next day's battle.

In At the End of the Fray, Hariyama came out as Tyson's third Pokémon. Making good use of its Thick Fat Ability, Hariyama used Arm Thrust to push through the flames thrown at it by Ash's Torkoal. Once it reached Torkoal, a single Brick Break was enough to smash Torkoal unconscious. Hariyama then battled Ash's powerful Corphish, throwing its full weight into another Brick Break, only for it to dodge. The two then crashed together with a Crabhammer/Focus Punch clash, but Hariyama won out and the resulting blast knocked Corphish out.

The battlefield changed after Hariyama had reduced Ash's team to three, and Tyson chose Hariyama to resume the battle against Ash's Swellow. Even Swellow's speed was insufficient, as Hariyama was able to catch Swellow's beak between its hands and smash it to the ground with Seismic Toss. However, Swellow's Aerial Ace allowed it to dodge Focus Punch and strike Hariyama on the chest, knocking it out cold.

Hariyama's known moves are Arm Thrust, Brick Break, Focus Punch, and Seismic Toss, and its Ability is Thick Fat.
