Tyson's Meowth (Japanese: テツヤのニャース Tetsuya's Nyarth) is Tyson's signature Pokémon. It appeared during the Ever Grande Conference between the episodes Like a Meowth to a Flame and At the End of the Fray. Its most notable features are the boots that it wears on its feet and its hat.

History

Just some time after he began his journey in Hoenn, Tyson saw Meowth in a forest near Ever Grande City when it was in a fierce battle with a Persian. It lost and was then abandoned by its pack in a weak condition. Tyson brought Meowth to a cabin he was traveling to and helped it to return to full health. As the soles of Meowth's feet were painful to stand on, Tyson gave it boots to help it to walk again. Meowth went on to become one of Tyson's strongest Pokémon.

Meowth is strong enough to evolve into a Persian but stubbornly refuses to due to its hatred of the species. In battle, its speed complements the power of its claws to produce a difficult opponent to beat. Ash had further difficulties as Meowth's Thunderbolt defended itself from electric attacks while Iron Tail could be used against Iron Tail and Double Team could be used against speed attacks.

When Team Rocket's Meowth first saw Tyson's Meowth, he was skeptical of the boots and seeing its attack range only led to jealously fueling his animosity towards Tyson's Meowth. However, on hearing the story of Tyson's Meowth, Meowth softened due to having the same hatred of Persian. Meowth was more proud to be a Meowth than ever before when Tyson's Meowth defeated Ash's Pikachu in battle.

Trivia

  • Tyson's Meowth is loosely based on the fairytale character Puss in Boots.
  • The day Tyson met his Meowth is similar to the time Forsythia met her Budew in Oh, Do you know the Poffin Plan!, when she gave her Budew her red scarf.
  • Team Rocket's Meowth had to practice and learn how to walk on two legs, having had a natural inclination to walk on all fours. Tyson's Meowth, however, displays the ability to walk without similarly practicing.
    • Also Tyson's Meowth and Team Rocket's Meowth both hate Persian.
  • Meowth is one of two signature Pokémon belonging to rivals that is unevolved, the other is Zoey's Glameow.
    • Interestingly, both are based on cats.
  • In the Latin American dub of Like a Meowth to a Flame, it has the same voice actor as Team Rocket's Meowth. However, near the end of that episode and in all subsequent appereances, it has the same voice as all other Meowth in the anime.
