Turtwig (Japanese: ナエトル Naetle) is a Grass-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Grotle starting at level 18, which evolves into Torterra starting at level 32.

Along with Chimchar and Piplup, Turtwig is one of three starter Pokémon of Sinnoh available at the beginning of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Biology

Physiology

Turtwig's appearance is characteristic of a turtle or tortoise, and it is primarily light green in coloration. Its prominent, yellow-colored jawbone may denote a relationship to the snapping turtle. Its green and yellow body is covered by a shell. A small seedling grows on a brown-colored patch on its head. The brown shell on its back has a thick black stripe and rim, and is apparently made of earth. The shell should feel moist on a healthy Turtwig. Turtwig’s eyes are yellow, as are its feet, and Turtwig’s tail is small.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Turtwig can utilize the sun in order to use moves like Synthesis and SolarBeam. Its rock hard shell provides great defense but reduces its speed. Turtwig are also capable of many other Grass-type moves such as Razor Leaf and Giga Drain.

Behavior

Turtwig is a Pokémon that tends to be non-violent. As a show of affection, some Turtwig have been known to chomp their Trainer's head. The leaf on its head will wilt if it becomes thirsty. As a result, it lives in areas that are close to lakes.

Turtwig is also sometimes either shy and lazy, or outgoing and protective.

Habitat

Turtwig are somewhat scarce in the wild. They're usually given to young Pokémon Trainers as a starter Pokémon by Professor Rowan. Turtwig can be found living along lakes in dense forests.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

As a plant-based Pokémon, Turtwig usually nourishes itself through photosynthesis. It can eat Berries like other Pokémon. It also drinks water, which hardens its soil-based shell. On a very healthy Turtwig, the shell should feel moist.

Major appearances

Ash's Turtwig

Ash obtained his Turtwig in Gettin' Twiggy With It!. It eventually evolved in Aiding the Enemy!, and again in The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!.

Paul's Turtwig

Paul's starter Pokémon was a Turtwig, which has fully evolved into a Torterra. It appeared as a Turtwig in a flashback with Paul in A Pyramiding Rage! where it was watching Reggie battle Brandon.

Other

The Gym Leader Gardenia has a Turtwig that first appeared in The Grass-Type is Always Greener!. It was used in the Gym battle against Ash in The Grass Menagerie. It defeated Staravia, but lost to Ash's Turtwig.

Minor appearances

Turtwig made its debut appearance in Following a Maiden Voyage. It was a starter Pokémon Professor Rowan was giving out. It had a relaxing nature and it was eating almost the whole time. Another Turtwig owned by Rowan appears in SS024.

Another Turtwig appeared in Dawn of a New Era!. It was under the ownership of a Trainer at the Pokémon Center.

Another Turtwig also appeared in Classroom Training!. A young boy was using it at the Trainers' School to battle a Chimchar.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Diamond owns a Turtwig, which he nicknamed "Tru" in Pokémon Adventures, which evolved into a Grotle simultaneously with Chimler (Pearl's Chimchar), and Platinum's Piplup in Eterna City, and then again in Veilstone City into a Torterra along with Chimler.

In the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! manga

Turtwig is Jun's starter Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!. It was partnered with Hareta's Piplup to battle Mars's Zubat and Purugly. It later appeared as a Torterra, having evolved from Grotle earlier.

Gardenia also has a Turtwig which was used in the Gym Battle against Hareta's Misdreavus.

Other appearances

Turtwig appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a trophy.

Trophy Information

"A Tiny Leaf Pokémon. Despite its animal appearance, Turtwig actually has vegetation sprouting from its head. The shell on its back is made of soil and hardens when it drinks water. Much like a plant, Turtwig performs photosynthesis, absorbing sunlight and making oxygen. It also relies heavily on water to keep its plant healthy and thus spends a lot of time near lakes. Turtwig evolves into Grotle."
