Torterra (Japanese: ドダイトス Dodaitose) is a dual-type Grass/Ground Pokémon.

It evolves from Grotle starting at level 32. It is the final form of Turtwig.

Biology

Torterra possess a giant, flat-looking shell that resembles those of the ankylosaurs. The rim of the shell is white and above their heads is a diamond-shaped extension of the rim. Torterra carry on their shells an enormous tree with soil nearby and three mountain peaks on its back, giving the impression that one is looking at a landscape from a distance. Their bodies are bulky and seem to be too big for their shells. Their bulk no longer allows them to withdraw into their shells as easily as they could as Turtwig, though it gives a sufficient amount of protection from foes. Their main body colors are a dull green on their backs and heads with a brown underbelly and legs. Torterra have several vertical lines running across their backs, though they have fewer lines going across their bellies. They bear two large spikes that jut out of the sides of their heads, making it look somewhat like an Ankylosaurs. Torterra's eyes are intimidating, encircled by a black ring and bearing small red pupils. Their mouth is jagged and at the end of their snout is a dark brown beak, giving them the appearance of a snapping turtle. Their thick, tree trunk-like legs are massive and powerful in order to hold up their enormous, heavy bodies. They bear three toes on each of their legs and appear as if they are actually jagged stones.

Their shell is the basis of their classification as the Continent Pokémon, befitting not only for their shell's appearance, but also for the size of Torterra's actual body. Despite their great size, these Pokémon are peaceful in nature and enjoy being with others of their own kind, preferring to bask in sunlight as they do not like to fight. When immobile, they look as if they are part of the ground upon which they rest, not as though they were a sleeping Pokémon. Because of this appearance, there are occasions when small Pokémon will gather and build nests on the shell of a stationary Torterra, who don't seem to notice or, if they do, mind. When Torterra do move, they often move in herds in search of water. These herds give the impression of a moving forest. Torterra is the heaviest of all the final evolved starters, and the second tallest, coming in only behind Feraligatr.

Physiology

Upon evolution, the two bushes on Grotle's back turn into a single, small, bonsai-like tree. What appears to be three miniature mountains have also grown on its back.

Special abilities

Torterra has the ability Overgrow, causing its Template:Type2 attacks to become stronger when it has taken a lot of damage.

Behavior

Torterra is a Pokémon that tends to be nonviolent. Calm and collected, Torterra will tolerate many things, even Pokémon nests being built on its back.

Habitat

Torterra live in dense forests near freshwater lakes.

In the anime

Torterra also appeared in the movie The Rise of Darkrai belonging to a Trainer named Maury. It battled against Ash's Pikachu.

Torterra's debut appearance in the anime was in Top-Down Training, where it was revealed to be Paul's starter Pokémon. It later helped Ash's Grotle cope with its reduced Speed in Aiding the Enemy.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga, Diamond owned a Turtwig which evolved into a Grotle, and then again into a Torterra.

• Torterra is the heaviest final form of a starter Pokémon weighing 683.4 pounds (310.0 kilograms).
  • It is also the second tallest form of a starter Pokémon; it is only 4 inches shorter than Feraligatr.
• Torterra shares the same species type with Groudon. Both of them are known as the Continent Pokémon.
• No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Torterra.
• Torterra has the highest base Defense of all the final stages of the Starter Pokémon.
• Torterra has the lowest Speed of all the final evolutions of the starters.

Origin

Torterra has aspects of a snapping turtle and an ankylosaurus, a species of armored dinosaur. It may also be based upon the world turtles in various mythologies that carry worlds upon their backs, or perhaps the Xuanwu/Genbu of various Asian myths. The head and legs make it resemblant to a Home's Hingeback Tortoise, a reptile that lives in Central African rainforest.

Name origin

Its name comes from tortoise and terra, which is Latin for "ground". The -terra may also refer to terrapins. Its Japanese name may come from 土 do, earth or ground, 大 dai, large, and tortoise. 土台 Dodai also means foundation.
