Thief (Japanese: どろぼう Thief) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation II.
Thief inflicts damage and then the user steals the target's held item. The item cannot be stolen if the user is already holding an item, if the target is not holding an item, or if the target is holding mail. The item also cannot be stolen when a wild Pokémon uses this move on the player's Pokémon. Thief steals non-player character's Pokémon's items permanently.
Same as Generation II. In addition, the item cannot be stolen if the target has the Sticky Hold ability. In Pokémon Colosseum and XD, Thief doesn't steal items.
Same as Generation III. Additionally, if an opponent Pokémon uses Thief or Covet on the player's Pokémon, the item will be returned at the end of the battle. Items cannot be stolen from Pokémon with Multitype. The Griseous Orb cannot be stolen.
Thief no longer steals non-player character's Pokémon's items permanently.
