Teddiursa (Japanese: ヒメグマ Himeguma) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Ursaring starting at level 30.

Biology

Physiology

Teddiursa are small, mammalian Pokémon that resemble bear cubs. They have short, orange-brown fur that covers their body, except for their mouth and the crescent moon marking on their heads, which are a light tan. They have small, round bodies with short limbs and a short, puffy tail. They also have circular eyes with blue irises, three claws on their forepaws, and two on their feet, on which there is a circular yellow paw-pad on the underside. Teddiursa are reminiscent in appearance of teddy bears.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

It is said that when Teddiursa find honey, the crescent moon on their head glows. They have also been known to concoct their own honey out of fruit and Beedrill pollen. Teddiursa tend to lick their paws because their paws absorb honey.

Behavior

Teddiursa appear to have a large appetite. Before food becomes scarce in wintertime, its habit is to hoard food in many hidden locations. They can be quite cunning in obtaining their food, for example charming people in order to steal food from them and tricking the people into blaming the thefts on other Pokémon. However, they have also been known to team up with friends. Teddiursa seem easily frightened and often look to Ursaring for protection.

Habitat

Both Teddiursa and its evolution Ursaring live in mountainous regions. However, they both have been observed to be in forested areas as well.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Teddiursa's favorite food is honey made with fruits and pollen collected by Beedrill. It also likes fruit, Berries, and acorns.

Trivia

  • Teddiursa is one of fourteen Pokémon that one can collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
  • The official HeartGold and SoulSilver artwork is the first to correctly depict a Teddiursa licking its paws. Previous interpretations (including game sprites and 3-D models) mistakenly portrayed it more like thumbsucking.
  • Teddiursa can be seen as a parallel to Phanpy. Both of them are Generation II Pokémon. Teddiursa is exclusive to Pokémon Gold*, and SoulSilver, while Phanpy is exclusive to Pokémon Silver* and HeartGold. They both also have one evolution each and both have Pickup as an Ability, while both their evolved forms do not.
    • Teddiursa and Phanpy, along with their evolutions, are the only Pokémon to swap version-exclusive status between localizations.

Origin

Teddiursa is based on a teddy bear and possibly a Sun Bear or Sloth Bear cub, both honey bears. The moon marking, the fact that it is a cub, and the fact that it is a bear may mean it might have been based on the constellation Ursa Minor's mythology.

Name origin

Teddiursa is a combination of teddy bear and ursa (Latin for bear).

Himeguma may be a combination of 姫 hime (princess) or hi (an alternate reading of 朏 mikazuki [crescent moon]) and 熊 kuma (bear).
