Yes I know this is speculative but I kinda thought of this
look at Hiyappu and how it has its eyes closed
now look at Baoppu and its pose..it looks like it wants you to speak up
and Yanappu its mouth is open...but is there sound coming out?
doesnt it look similar to the Three wise monkeys? maybe it could be added to the origins?

name origin?
When I first saw Hiyappu (ヒヤップ) I mistakenly read its name as Hiyassu (I feel embarrassed, lol), so my first thought of the origin of the name was the verb 冷やす (hiyasu) to cool, to chill. It seems I wasn't far off, because with a quick little dictionary research I found 冷や (hiya) cool water/sake. I assume at this point 冷や + ape (as speculated in the Yanappu article) is a good guess, so I'll add it to the article.
