It's prescriptivist, pretentious "correct" English. Only plurals receive such treatment, James is singular, and among other things, a proper noun, which is usually exempt from normal grammar rules. Citations? Okay. First, it was you who originally had most of the episode titles in characters' bios in Japanese, before I changed them, wasn't it? (What's wrong with my translation of that one? And even if that one is hard to translate, how is "Yukiwarashi o Tsukamaero!" hard to translate?) Second, here is some more proof:

Youd do not add an "S" after the apostrophe if the word ends with "S", so James' is correct.

And being a Chris, I learned long ago, and repeatedly, they the Pokemon owned by Chris is Chris's Blastoise. Only in ancient proper names ending in -es or -s ends in an apostrophe. Jesus' Aerodactyl. Moses' Crawdaunt. Chris's Roselia. James's Cacnea. To speak of James' Cacnea speaks of the Cacnea owned by multiple James.
