In the anime
Swampert first appeared in Abandon Ship. It evolved from a Marshtomp that was living in an abandoned ship ever since it was separated from its trainer.
Morrison introduced his Swampert to Ash and friends in Saved by the Beldum.
Tucker used his Swampert and Arcanine to battle against Ash's Corphish and Swellow in a double battle in Tactics Theatrics!.
A Swampert was shown under the ownership of Brendan in his cameo appearance in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. This is to keep in theme with the games of the rival's starter Pokémon having a type-advantage over the player's starter Pokémon (in this case, May's Blaziken).
A Swampert appeared in a flashback in Mutiny in the Bounty! as one of Pokémon Hunter J's captured Pokémon.
A Swampert is used by one of the students of Pokémon Summer Academy in the second leg of the Pokémon Triathlon in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team!.
A Swampert appeared in Leading a Stray! where it had an antagonistic role.

Trivia
- Swampert has the highest base stat total of all the starter evolutions.
- Swampert has the highest base HP of all final evolution starter Pokémon.
- Swampert is tied with Empoleon for the second lowest base Speed of all final evolution starter Pokémon (second only after Torterra).
- However, all three have considerably high Defense and Special Defense when compared to the other final stage of the starter Pokémon of their regions.
- Swampert is the only starter-type besides Blaziken (Template:Type2 weak to Template:Type2) to have a 4× weakness against another starter type (Template:Type2 and Template:Type2 being weak to Template:Type2).
- Swampert is the only fully evolved Template:Type2 starter Pokémon that does not learn Hydro Pump by level up, although it can learn it as Mudkip before evolving.
Origin
Like Mudkip and Marshtomp, Swampert is based on the mudpuppy or mudskipper.
Name origin
Swampert's name is probably derived from swamp and rampart, expert or inert. Its Japanese name is probably a combination of lagoon and large, referring to its size.
