The '''Surf glitch''' is a [[glitch]] found only in the Japanese versions of {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s}} best known for allowing the player to catch the [[event]]-only [[legendary Pokémon]] {{p|Darkrai}} and {{p|Shaymin}}. The glitch is accessed due to the door in {{EF|Aaron}}'s room of the {{si|Pokémon League}} having bad programming, allowing for the player, while facing it, to use {{m|Surf}} if it is selected from the Pokémon menu. This will allow the player to step into the [[void]] around the indoors area consisting of the room and walk to another area. Though this, with steps easily countable using the [[Pokétch]], the player can walk to [[Newmoon Island]] and the [[Flower Paradise]], finding Darkrai and Shaymin there available for capture without the need for their respective event items, the [[Member Card]] and [[Oak's Letter]]. Following the capture of the Pokémon, the player can merely {{m|Fly}} or {{m|Teleport}} back to a normally-accessible area and resume playing normally.

If the Member Card or Oak's Letter is obtained in the game at a later time, neither Shaymin nor Darkrai will regenerate, and so this is for naught. So far, the [[Mystery Gift]] events for these items have only been available to players of {{game|Platinum}}, from which this anomaly was removed, perhaps because of the lack of need for the event in Diamond and Pearl.
By counting steps using the [[Pokétch]] pedometer app, the player can travel to [[Newmoon Island]] and the [[Flower Paradise]] without the event-exclusive [[Member Card]] and [[Oak's Letter]] items, respectively. Despite the fact that [[Spear Pillar]] and the [[Hall of Origin]] are programmed into the game as separate areas, the latter cannot be reached using this glitch due to the fact that the Underground cannot be accessed from either of these locations.
As this glitch bypasses the usual event flags, neither Pokémon will regenerate if the player later acquires the Member Card or Oak's Letter and travels to the area normally. To partially remedy this, the two event Pokémon were given through direct [[Mystery Gift]] distributions rather than Mystery Gift distributions of the event items. The items were not legitimately distributed until the release of {{game|Platinum}}, in which the glitch has been fixed as the items now properly work as event flags.

It is also possible to use the Surf glitch to reach other areas, including the [[Hall of Fame]].
Venturing into the void provides for some interesting and potentially hazardous consequences to those who would exploit this glitch. As the area has not been programmed properly, since the player would normally not be able to access it, it runs the risk of causing the player to get stuck forever. Saving outside of the boundaries of a building or in the [[Mystery Zone]] may cause corruption of game data, including the loss of the save file completely, with the player required to start their game anew.


Nintendo has [[n:Nintendo officially acknowledges glitches in Diamond and Pearl|acknowledged the glitches]] and offered workarounds and methods of recovery. The glitch was removed from English and international versions of the games, however, [[tweaking]] can lead to the same result in these games. Platinum addresses both glitches in all versions of the game.
It is strongly believed, although not conclusively proven, that the [[Hall of Origin]] is inaccessible with this glitch, as it is not an outdoor area unlike the other two event-only areas. Regardless, {{p|Arceus}} is not obtainable with this glitch for several reasons (see [[Hall of Origin#Trivia|here]] for more information).

For both this glitch and the above-mentioned broken escalator glitch, in the case where the player has saved the game while trapped, it is possible to repair the save state with a program that was distributed to [[DS Download Station]]s in Japan starting October 27. The player will be transported back outside their house in [[Twinleaf Town]], allowing them to resume the game.

This article is about the glitch in Generation IV. For the glitch in Generation I which uses Surf, see List of glitches in Generation I → Statue collision oversight.

The Surf glitch is a glitch found only in the Japanese versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl best known for allowing the player to catch the event-only legendary Pokémon Darkrai and Shaymin. It is one of two glitches in Generation IV officially acknowledged by Nintendo, with the other being the broken escalator oversight.

Performing the glitch

Due to a programming mistake, the door in Aaron's room of the Pokémon League can be Surfed through, by facing the door and selecting Surf from the party screen. This allows the player to step into the void around the indoor area and walk to other areas.

By counting steps using the Pokétch pedometer app, the player can travel to Newmoon Island and the Flower Paradise without the event-exclusive Member Card and Oak's Letter items, respectively. The player can proceed to catch Darkrai and Shaymin at these locations, then Fly or Teleport back to a normally-accessible area and resume play.

As this glitch bypasses the usual event flags, neither Pokémon will regenerate if the player later acquires the Member Card or Oak's Letter and travels to the area normally.
