Sunflora (Japanese: キマワリ Kimawari) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Sunkern when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Sunflora's body is based on a sunflower. Every part of Sunflora’s body but its head is colored green, with its face being cream-colored. Its head is circular and sports sunflower-like yellow petals from the sides, although the back of its head is cream-colored. Sunflora has leaves extending like arms from its round body, and two toes on each foot.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Sunflora’s diverse movepool makes it a versatile species. For instance, Sunflora can use seed-based attacks such as Leech Seed, Bullet Seed, and Worry Seed as well as moves that rely on leaves, including Razor Leaf and Leaf Storm. Additionally, Sunflora can learn a range of HP-restoring moves such as Mega Drain or Ingrain and even acquire the weather-manipulating Sunny Day.

Behavior

Sunflora are constantly seen with a wide smile. Sunflora are only awake during the day: they awake as soon as the sun rises and close their petals to go to sleep as soon as the sun sets. While the sun is up, they move about in a hectic manner pursuing warm sunlight but come to a complete stop when the sun sets.

Habitat

Sunflora are rarely found in the wild, and are thought to share their habitat with Sunkern.

Sunflora appeared in Zoroark: Master of Illusions as a few of the many local Pokémon who lives in Crown City. One of them worked with the other Pokémon in surrounding Zorua to attack him, angry at Zorua for what Zoroark did to the city. Before a fight broke out, Sunflora, along with the other Pokémon, were calmed by Celebi.

Trivia

File:MeowthSunflora.png
Meowth disguised as a Sunflora
  • In Generation III, Sunflora is the only Template:Type2 that can learn Bullet Seed by level-up.
  • Sunflora's base Speed is the same as Sunkern's.
  • Sunflora shares the same species name with Espeon and Volcarona. They are all known as the Sun Pokémon.
    • Despite being a Pokémon classified as the Sun Pokémon, it cannot learn Morning Sun by level up, only learning it as an egg move.
  • Sunflora is Meowth's most frequently used Pokémon disguise.
  • The number of Sunflora's petals is altered in between generations:
  • Sunflora is tied with Roserade for the lowest base Defense of all fully-evolved Grass-types.

Origin

Sunflora is based on a sunflower.

Name origin

Sunflora's name is a combination of sun and flora, referring to the plants and sunlight. Its name is also reminiscent of Sunflower. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 黄 ki, yellow, 吉 ki, joy, or 曦 ki, sun, and 向日葵 himawari, sunflower.

In other languages

  • German: Sonnflora - From Sonne (sun) and flora.
  • French: Heliatronc - From Helios and tronc (tree trunk).
  • Korean: 해루미 Haerumi
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 向日花怪 Xiàng Rì Huā Guài - Literally "Sun-facing flower freak". 向日 can be derived from 向日葵 Xiàngrìkuí (sunflower).
