Stunfisk (Japanese: マッギョ Maggyo) is a dual-type Ground/Electric Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Stunfisk smiling

Stunfisk is a fish-like creature with a broad, flattened, mud-brown body and a yellow tail that is constantly held above its face. At the base of its tail is a yellow marking shaped like an upside-down exclamation mark. It has small, horizontal, oval-shaped eyes, white with a tiny black pupil and no irises. Almost exactly between these two eyes lies its mouth, which comprises of two thick gray lips. Finally, it has two small, flimsy fins at the sides of its body. These fins have two lobes.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Stunfisk 'flying'

Stunfisk have electrical powers, which they use to zap their prey. They also have very tough skin that keeps them unharmed if stepped on, even by sumo wrestlers. They are also capable of leaping into the air and flapping their fins like wings to remain airborne.

Behavior

Stunfisk bury themselves in mud of the seashore and wait for prey to pass by. Whenever unsuspecting prey touch a Stunfisk's body, it is zapped. Stunfisk smiles when electrocuting its foes.

Trivia

  • Despite being based on a fish and living in the water, Stunfisk is not Water-type.
    • Its Pokédex entries state it can reside in mud as well, despite taking super effective damage from both Ground- and Water-type attacks.
  • Stunfisk is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 471.
  • Stunfisk has the lowest Speed of all Electric-type Pokémon.
  • Stunfisk is the only Electric-type Pokémon in the brown color group.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Stunfisk.
  • Stunfisk is one of four Pokémon immune to one of its own types without the aid of an Ability. It shares this trait with Gligar, Gliscor and Landorus.
  • Stunfisk is the only non-legendary Ground-type Pokémon that is not related to any other Pokémon by evolution.
  • Both of Stunfisk's non-Hidden Abilities are related to paralysis: Limber prevents this status ailment, while Static inflicts it on the foe.
  • Stunfisk bears a slight resemblance to Admiral Ackbar's head, and it's status as the trap pokemon may be a reference to Ackbar's infamous line, "It's a trap!"

Origin

Stunfisk seems to be based on a flounder or dab combined with an electric ray. It may also be based on the stargazer, another fish that spends most of its time buried in the sea bottom and can make electric discharges when disturbed.

Name origin

Stunfisk may be a combination of stun and fisk (fish in most Northern European languages, from Old English fisk) or a combination of stun, fish, and disk (in reference to its flat shape).

Maggyo may be a combination of マッド maddo (mud) and 魚 gyo (fish). It may also refer to まぐろ maguro (tuna).
