History

Steven and Metagross in the manga

Metagross first appeared with Steven in the Ruby & Sapphire arc when Steven contacted Captain Stern on the PokéNav.

Metagross than hid in some rocks in Granite Cave with Metang. While the Mawile defended themselves from Steven's Beldum with Iron Defense, it emerged from the rocks, defeating the Mawile. Afterwards, it was seen flying with Steven on Metang after he asked Ruby in joining him in the fight with Team Magma and Team Aqua.

Later, Steven and Metagross came to Wallace's rescue in the Lilycove Department Store from Tabitha's insanity from the jewels. It took on Tabitha's Torkoal and began with Meteor Mash. Afterwards, Metagross defeated both Tabitha and Torkoal despite the latter having the type advantage and that Torkoal was worn out from the battle with Wallace's Luvdisc, Elizabeth. With both Tabitha and Torkoal defeated, Metagross flew Steven to Sootopolis City. Along the way, Steven has Metagross fly to an explosion as he noticed Sapphire trapped. After Steven was able to control Registeel, he and Metagross watched as Sapphire became trapped in the explosion.

Wallace noticed that Sapphire, Plusle, and Minun were trapped in the aircar and enlisted Metagross to help control the aircar. Metagross took the aircar to the Trick Master where he used the New Mauville generator that was modified to fly in order for Plusle and Minun to create a hole in the barrier in the aircar.

During the Platinum arc, it flew Steven to the Sinnoh region so that Steven could collect rare stones located there. After Steven sold his Villa, he flew away on Metagross back to Hoenn. Metagross reappeared in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc.

Personality and characteristics

Metagross's magnetism causes it to float in the air, allowing Steven to ride it. As such, it has been mainly relied on as a method of flight transportation.

As a Mega Metagross

Metagross made its appearance in SS031 as a Shiny Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution.

Metagross first appeared when Steven sent it out and Mega Evolved it in a battle against Alain's Charizard. It was shown being extremely strong in both offense and defense, dealing heavy blows on Alain's Mega Charizard X and being able to withstand even a strong Blast Burn with little effort. Before the battle could be finished, however, it was interrupted by Lysandre and his Pyroar.

Steven later sent out and Mega Evolved his Metagross while facing Mega Rayquaza. When Alain's Mega Charizard X was struck by Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent, Metagross tried to grab it, but was knocked away by Rayquaza. It was then forced to take evasive action to avoid Rayquaza's Draco Meteor.

In the games

Steven owns a Metagross in every game he appears in, except for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, as he doesn't battle the player. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it gains the ability to Mega Evolve. It also appears as a Shiny Mega Pokémon in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Special Demo Version to promote the Shiny Metagrossite Beldum that launched at the full version's release.
